 Hi,

I am a 69 year old newby, so take it easy on me.

I am a programer I understand most commands. I, however, have never used a modeling program so I am completly lost.

I was trying to sweep a cube. I wanted to make it longer. Following the instructions I clicked on the Point Select Arrow and left clicked on the cube. The instructions then said select the select by face, whick I did. Then it said to right click on the face you wanted to select and it would turn green, which I did. However......I keep getting the the soft selection with the circles. I know by experminting with it I have probably messed up some setting.

Could someone please tell me what I have done and how to streghten it out.

Just change your selection mode to 'Select by Painting' ( or one of the other modes in the same flyout ) as shown below.
It really has nothing to do with painting, but I guess it sounded better than 'Select by, uh, selecting'

 Thanks so much for the quick reply.

I am a dummy. Sometimes I don't look far enough. I didn't look at the top of the tool bar.
