Hi All,

I have a couple of questions regarding workspace side that hopefully someone can assist with:

1. Can you create Grid Array of selections in Workspace as easy as Model side (I cant see a command for this)?

2. Is it possible to apply a texture to a face that isn't stretched (ie so that it retains its original proportions)?

Also it should keep its original sizes even if the face is stretched ie the texture will then eventually repeat rather than stretching also?

Kind regards, J

1. Not sure what you mean. If you mean the Array tools found on the Model side, there is no built-in equivalent on the workspace side. There are array scripts though, some provided in the libraries that come with tS.

2. Whether or not the texture is stretched when applied to one face depends entirely on the UV map you have applied to that face (this is true on workspace and Model side). If the UV map is planar and fits the face perfectly, the image used will fit the face perfectly. If the UV map is not specific to the face and covers more of the object, or if its not planar, or if it doesn't fit the face perfectly, then you will get stretching, or cropping.

Neither Model nor workspace side let you scale an object and have the UV mapping not scale with it. However, workspace does let you do something like that in Point Editing - in the Point Edit options panel in the stack on the right, check the "Preserve Unwrap" option. Now as you move edges, faces and vertices, they "slide under" the UV map, "exposing" repeats of an image or "cropping" the image, rather than stretching the UV map with the change.

I created some array tools for the workspace some time back. I should update them, but they should still work alright.

I also made a plane that allows the texture to tile as the object is scaled. I see no reason this couldn't be applied to any 3d object, though it may take some work to set up initially. See attached.

Edit: Attached a cleaned up version of the Auto Tile Plane.

Hi Dele, thanks for the array and layerz link - I have started to have aplay around with these....

Also, I believe you mentioned there may be a 'fit-to-screen' plugin / script somehwere (for workspace side)?

I use lots of cad programmes at work and this i believe this to be a much needed command

Hope you can point me in the right direction

I'm not aware of a fit to screen command / script - but there are a lot out there, so me not being aware of it doesn't mean it isn't there. A forum search would be the way to go at present, as all the workspace side plugins / scripts are in here.

I recommend a compilation of all scripts for tS WS with links. Better yet a one stop shop place bin for scripts. To search in forums for a possible script that may not exist or does exist and to find is hard to do.

My one word reply to that - TurboSquid ;) An excellent search engine, with categories, industry standard and widely used. Not only makes it easy to find tS scripts, but also shows the world just how powerful tS is. Folks should know that tS has this sort of capability!

And it would make finding scripts easier - I have always held searching forums is a terrible way to do it, and that user run websites are great, but lack the support and infrastructure that something like TurboSquid gives automatically (and at no charge or cost, in money or time, for anyone).

I think this is what TomG is trying to get everyone to do with TurboSquid.... it's certainly not a tidy set up at the moment here... not that I'm looking yet as I can't currently use workspace anyway due to hardware issues.

TurboSquid would be great except all the killer scripts are not there, at least yet. Still would be a great having an up to date compilation of scripts and location here and at TurboSquid ;). Speaking of TurboSquid, I need to start putting some stuff there myself.

Turbosquid is dominated by common formats like 3ds and obj.

Until now tS has less to no weight there.

It maybe a good storage device but I fear that more get lost as can be found.

Not speaking about the enormous fee of 50% if you sell something.

Also it's US related, surely not a problem for people living there

but for other "outsiders". Privatly also non of my mail requests got an answer.

For me not a good sign but OK that's just my personal oppinion :D

upss I'm going offtopic, excuse...

TurboSquid can make a great place for free items though. And by being more visible and easier to find, more people should track down your own store should you chose to host your items elsewhere - TurboSquid will still bring your name to their attention if they see something they like, and then they are more likely to find your store elsewhere.

As an aside, I have made many more sales from TurboSquid than from my own store, and in the end have made 20 times more from TurboSquid as a result, despite having to pay them more royalties. That visibility does count (better a small fish in a big pond, etc). The object comes in OBJ format, which is the main reason for its sales, even though it was made in tS, so while it's true a tS object might not gather much attention (yet), if you are selling in a standard format, then the fact that people can find your product on TurboSquid can greatly increase the money you make.

Horses for courses of course! Each much decide what is best for them, based on their product and market. However, for free items like those posted here on the forums, it makes a good way for us tS users to find them, while the forums here are very bad for that with their limited search.

Hi all,

With regards to the previous comments regarding plugins etc for the Workspace side, I was just wondering if any new release date is due for Truespace that may adress some of these issues being discussed?

Hi jofan,

Not sure what issues you are referring to, could you elaborate please? There are no issues in the current trueSpace that have been mentioned as changing / affecting what plugins are available in the workspace, at least not that I've seen commented on here - the issues here were relating to how to find the plugins that have been created.

Either way, there is no announced date for the next patch to trueSpace - it's a long standing policy not to discuss that until the release is imminent (and many threads on that subject can be found with a forum search!). But let me know all the same what issues you were thinking about, perhaps there is some answer that can be given :)
