OK, so, I have now made many a 3D model, from a cologne bottle to a child's airplane. Now, comes the fun part. Texturing. Can anyone point me in the right direction as how to put custom textures on my 3D models. For example, I need to put all of the different call numbers on the airplane.

This is all I know right now. I'd like to see the same described with UV Mapping (I think UV mapping is probably a more precise tool, but I don't know yet ?).

Give me a screen grab of the object you want to paint. Then I will tell you if my "way" of doing it will work. If not then you will have to uv map the object.

Well, that is the thing. I need a universal way to texture something. I have many models, but no textures that make it look pretty. Would I use UV mapping to do it?

first off give me a screen grab, wire frame, of your object, and tell me what you want to do. Lets just take this one part at at time.

OK, well, I am currently on a different computer, but I will post a screen grab ASAP.
