Hi, could anyone tell me the easiest way to consolidate a number of object into one?

Ideally i would like to be able to draw a rectangle around my object selection, then click to combine to one object

On the Model side, I have been using glue as sibbling(?), but i have then had to individually click on each sub object (assuming i am doing this correctly), but as i mention it would be better to be able to draw a rectangle around my selection if possible?

Also not sure how to do this in Workspace side either?

Reagrds,

J

I'm not sure if this works in 7.6 but does in 6.6, but if you hold down ctrl while you've got the object tool selected, you can drag a box around the objects you want, and they'll be grouped until you unselect your obejcts

If you then want to glue them, click on "glue as sibling" and it'll then do it automatically (although the tool will still ask you to select the objects, you can just hit space)

Or altenatively, use the "bolean union" tool, to weld everything together

As for workspace...sorry, haven't got a clue

There are a number of ways to do this.

On the model side... you're gluing siblings. That's grouping into a heirarchy, not making it a single mesh. Holding down the control key to select a group to glue works in 7.6 on the model side as Weevil pointed out.

On the Workspace side you'd use Encapsulate to do the same thing. The difference is that you'd select your group in the link editor rather than in the 3D window (see video).

With grouped objects you can still go into the heirarchy to manipulate the sub-objects.

If you're asking about combining objects to create a single mesh, that would be a function of booleans in either the workspace or on the modeler side.

Hi All,

Many thanks for your advice - the model side works a treat, thanks!

Heidi, on the workspace side, you suggest a video - not sure if this should be attached as i cant see anything but looking forward to trying this?

Cool! I'm glad you were able to find what you needed.

If clicking on the video doesn't play it in your browser. Right-click on it and save it to your desktop to see if it will play from there.

Hi Hedi / Anyone who can help....

I have managed to encapsulate my objects using boolean union in workspace (this works well with the final programme that i need to export my model to, so im happy with this)

However, so far i am having to achieve this by clicking the boolean union icon and then clicking on each of the sub objects i require in my final 'super' object

Is there a way i can simply select a window of object to add as a boolean union (i am using workspace side at present)?

The text prompt at the bottom of the screen does say LClick and drag but i cant appear to do the dragging bit!

At the bottom of my post it says 'attached file' encapsulate2.wmv. Right now it's showing 7 views so other people are seeing it. You should be able to either left click on it to view, or right-click and save the wmv to your desktop to view. There's going to be another wmv at the bottom of this post. ;)

Using boolean union. It needs something to boolean to. One method is to select individual objects or sub-objects. The other method is to left-click and drag in the link editor to select all but one of your objects. Click on the boolean union icon, then click on the single object that you didn't include in your group selection (see video attachment).

You may need to chang the Link Editor from 4D to 2D.

In any event, you can't just click a window. You need to tell it what you want to boolean.

Hi Heidi / All,

Many thanks for the assistance on this, the video has helped tremendously.

Just one further question to ask about object selection that may help with visualising what i am trying to select

When I select an object (in workspace) the object is highlighted in light yellow.

I cannot see anywhere in the settings how to change this (ideally i would like to change the colour or itensify this if possible)

Could anyone suggest how to do this (if it is possible)?

Kind regards,

J

Try the settings tab Desktop section and change the "Default" in the title bar to "Colors".
