The mannikin I built and rigged some time ago has developed a black face. It is not a shadow - I can rotate it in the light with no effect. I have tried repainting the mannikin, but the face area remains flat black - no reflections at all. I also tried deleting a single face in the black area and forming a new one. Still black. The problem doesn't render in Vray, but still, it's annoying.

If I right click into edit mode, the problem disappears, then reappears as soon as I exit edit mode.

Thanks for any clues. Spare us the racial jokes. This mannikin is very sensitive.

It could be either the mesh or the materials. What material did you paint it with? Can you use the eyedropper tool to show us what material is on it?

Some of the materials get wierd if you change back and forth between the workspace and the model side.

I've been gone for holidays. Thanks to both of you for replies. It wasn't the material - I repainted the mannikin with the default gray material in the Vray material editor - the black remained. I finally replaced the head and that solved it, but I had a lot of re-rigging to do. The mannikin has a whole new personality now - probably the head replacement.

well it looks like the normals on those faces have been reversed.

Barring that, you could (for future reference) go into the Link Editor, and go inside the head node. Make note of the texture. Is it the same color as the rest of the body? If not you can delete the material node inside, then repaint.

a way to find out if the normals are switched is to check Show backfaces

can be found below Settings on the Scene bar

If you set a check mark there and the normals are switched the material becomes visible as expected.
