Confused about add regular polygon // New Users

First I create an 8 sided polygon with the add regular polygon command, then use the extrude tool to change the z axis height. Ok so far. Now I want to paint one of the sides of the polygon. When I try to do this I'm asked if I want to change the NURBS object to a polygon object, so I click yes. The info panel shows I have 16 faces, but when I try to paint an individual face, the entire object gets painted.

Is there some way to paint just an individual face, or is a limitation of using the regular polygon tool? I did select the paint face tool first.

Thanks!

Did you use this ME's "Paint Face" tool ?

Yes I selected the paint face tool before trying to paint to the object(the icon looked like a paint brush). I use version 6.6, but I just tried it in 7.6 and it has the same behavior. Now if I create a predefined object from the object palette, like a plane or cube, I can individually paint each face.

Add regular polygon is a nurbs function. The material editor sees nurb polygons as a single face. Also when converting nurbs, their faces are triangulated.

There are a couple number of ways to solve your problem.

1. You can just go into the workspace and back again. Then the Material Editor will see the individual faces.

2. After converting to from nurbs to poly you can right click on your object and quad-divide. This will increase the number of faces but the material editor will see them.

3. Instead of a regular polygon, you can create an 8-sided cylinder and remove the top use point edit to delete the faces of the top and bottom end caps. You won't get triangulation with this method.

If you're using 6.6, here is the most straightforward method:

<EDIT> Alternatively, if you begin with the 'Add Regular Polygon' tool, your second step would be to
click the 'Convert NURBS patch to polyhedron (or curve to polygon)' tool.
Then sweep, and paint face, etc. Same result, just a couple extra steps.

More Primitive Phun Phacts:

For a more interactive Primitive experience, first create your primitive by clicking in the workspace, then immediately after, right-click the Primitive icon.
You'll get an expanded set of panels that allow you to change, in real time, the many different aspects of the primitive, besides the basic latitude/longitude/radius panel that you'll get if you right-clicked the Primitive icon before creating a Prim.

My apologies if you already know this stuff, I try to explain so that new users who come along later might also find this useful.

Once again, this is applicable for tS6/ or Model side of tS7

Here I attach video of how to use Paint Face tool with NURBS obj (create from extrude of "add regular polygon" tool )

avi file inside the zip file. (hope this is what you want to do)

A big thanks to everyone who responded. I was able to paint the individual faces using the Add regular polygon, convert NURBS, then sweep technique, but I then found a top and bottom was being added to the object! :(

So in the end, I decided to just create a cylinder, normalized the location, copy it and change it's dimensions slightly then boolean subtract the two. A little more work, but seems to work better.
