Just a dumb question that the answer really doesn't matter but I am curious as to why if I set widget orientation to object and when U select a face it looks as I would expect, but when I select a edge or point the orientation seem not what I would expect, but what seems to be some unknown stange orientation. See attached images.

The orientation looks right to me - the edge of course has a normal pointing in a direction in between the faces it is part of. If you sweep it, that's the direction it will sweep out in.

I guess one thing to do is ask just what you did expect for the orientation ;) In this one particular case case with the faces at right angles to each other for that edge (and for the vertex), you might expect a widget that oriented like that seen on the face, since the right angles of the widget would match both faces the edges is part of - but what if one of those faces was sloped, at an angle to the other face. Then which face should the widget orient to? There would be a couple of different "expected" results.

You can use World if you do want the widget oriented per the world axes, but for Object, its normal for the normal to be angled like that :)

Same applies for a vertex of course, its normal is derived from the various edges it is part of.

HTH!
