Is there a way to show an entire scene's mesh without having to boolean union the entire scene ?

Yes...............the view shown in the SMC to show how you created your scene. Sometimes, boolean union is touchy.

For either one just pick one and the entire scene changes to that.

Assuming you're running tS7, change the display mode to Wireframe Mode (outlined in purple below).
Also note the Setting/Scene/ Surface and Edges Opacity sliders...they do the real work.
Changing the 'Mode' does nothing unless you adjust the opacity sliders as well.

No boolean needed, just adjust the display settings.

I also found that "glue as sibling" seems to be a better alternative than "boolean union" !
