I have recentley been trying to render certain cpu's for a website, however the die(s) on the chip have really jagged edges and i'm not sure why. It is not that the objects have too little polygons as I have tried subdividing, to no avail. Is it something to do with the lighting/reflectiveness of the scene, should I really be using ibl for it, or use a spotlight instead. I want to be able to take a render from any angle and have it looking reasonably reaslistic.

Can anybody help?

Check your anti-aliasing settings(in the render options). There are a few to choose from starting with draft to 4X.;)

Thanks hultek43, however I always have anti-aliasing set to adaptive.

You made no mention of the settings used. You could try to increase the setting to 2X or higher, perhaps it will solve the problem, but it will result in longer rendering times.

I agree this could be the problem however I dont think it is as i have never noticed it before on any of my other renders. Sorry I failed to mention the settings I was using. However I think if it was jsut an AA problem then there would be other areas of the scene that would be jagged and it doesn't explain why there is a sort of orange/yellow glow around the main die, thanks anyway.

Here is a slightly better render with the reflectiveness turned down:

That image is a much better render. The image looks alot better with the reflections turned down:D

I think part of the problem may have been the tin foil effect I had the cpu on.

"Never put a cpu on tin foil", it would be titled :D

Try a little bevel on the edges as well. Nothing too radical but if you run your finger across the edge of the chip it does not cut your finger because it does have a slight curve to it...;)

Another one who could be doing some nice design work in his free time. Pity your GCSE is not in Chip design!....

Huh, i'm just doing this for fun, I actually have loads of other work that I could be doing instead (coursework).

However, I will try the bevel, but how would I do it?

I presume you wouldn't get a cuboid and then cut a cylinder out of it and then cut out bits of the cpu board with that, a bit like this:?

C'mon now Hemulin-have I taught you that badly? ;)

Use the fillet/bevel tool (same place as sweep icon). You can drag the widget on screen to adjust the faces and angle.

Personally Paul If i was going to do that I would do as Chris (Hemulin) as done it. Doesn't have to be perfect if he is doing it for fun. But then again everyone is set in there ways in how they use true space:D

Stoker, how can you argue that making a custom shaped boolean cutter, copying it four times, rotating through 90 degrees and trying to locate exactly to remove the edge needed without boolean errors )booleans are destructive to geometry as well) is easier than using bevel tool?

One click to apply it-widget appears-set parameters-continue clicking all edges requiring bevel.

C'mon now....;) ;)

If Hemulin wanted a custom edge like using a router then maybe but for simple curve....we will have to have words about this..

Sorry, that was embaressingly easy :o , however I have never needed to bevel anything before (strange as it may seem) and there are some tools I have never used before, because, either haven't needed to, or I know of a different way (however long-winded) of doing it. Thanks splinters.

Splinters cant say I have ever needed to use it. Most certainly sounds alot more acurate and easier. I have always done the most simple of things, I could get away with doing this the way I have always done it:) I will try the bevel later if I find some time:) .

Make sure you save before using fillet or chamfer though, they are extremely buggy tools, and once it's done you can't undo.

I have tried the bevel tool, however it has been slightly complicated because the board consists of two pieces one on top of each other, I have beveled both to see if it worked. However you can't really tell there is much of a bevel because the material is quite dark, and it has messed up some of the text :(.

Yeah, I see what you mean Hemulin. The text on the first one looks better than the second. Still it is progressing from your original model:)

Hemuli, What exactly are these images for, or is it just for a bit of fun (experimenting with truespace):)

Stoker, it's for a website:

http://www.fahinfo.org/

I'm currently revamping the logo, I have no specific time limit, and I am not sure how I am going to change it yet, however my first step is re-modelling everything in truespace, and then just to see where it goes from there. :jumpy:

Sounds like fun Hemulin, I see what your modelling after looking at the website:)
