Hello,

I am an absolute noob with T7.6 but have experience with a few other 3D apps. My question is how do I do a render from the workspace? I have no problem usning virtualight or lightworks to render from the model tab but when I use the render to file button in the workspace the render dialogue opens , I choose a file to save to but pressing the render button seems to do nothing. The image is already rendered by DX in the workspace so what am I missing. Can I just save the image? I'm trying just to do a single frame (no animation yet). Otherwise I am having a blast using Truespace.

This will get you started.

Also without VRay there is no rendering engine other then DX9C on the workSpace side. The silver glossy sphere on the bottom right of your screen will send what you see (Real Time Render) to a file.

The Workspace render button is in a different location than the Model side one.
Like Steinie stated, unless you have VRay installed, realtime ( or perilous trips across the bridge) is what you get in Workspace. You'll have to plan accordingly for surfacing depending on what the intended output is going to be.

If you do have VRay, the render button is here:

Thanks for the help. Always fun to learn the ins and outs of a new app. This one is

proving to be real easy.

Steinie,

Me again

Glossy Silver Sphere? Could you please post a screenshot? I've had success using the bridge to the model space but I would still like to capture the DX render. It finally became clear when I realized that T7.6 is almost 2 separate apps: the legacy (model) side which is familiar to me and the new (workspace/DX) side which is the reason I am trying to learn how to use this. Thanx again for the pointers.

The sphere is located here, 4 icons down in this example.
You can render out to any size by changing the settings using the drop downs.
The render is almost instantaneous when you save.

I moved to trueSpace 7 from tS 4.3 so the jump was shocking. Unlike a few people here
I like the new interface and capability of adding custom tools. There are still issues to address
but the new tools that are available are so cool and easy to work with. In the older Silo I used to be able to apply sds to
only a part of a model. In the new Silo you can no longer do that. TS 7.6 has that feature and I love it.
Workflow needs some work especially the texturing tools. So many times I have changed the texture on a Model not knowing how it happened. Or waiting for a texture to "take" but only to find out I removed it instead! Hopefully the kinks will be worked out. There are lots of people out there working on their custom project for trueSpace, so the future looks bright. (I hope)
p.s. I do not use the Modeler side much. I'm trying to move forward with the advancements. The program stability for me is very good.

Steinie,

Thanks for the reply. I've tried using that button (that is what my original post was about) but literally nothing happens unless I try to save to a folder I don't have access to. I use virtualite mostly so its not really a problem. It's just that I thought I was doing something wrong (guess not). I come from the Blender world so different UI's/new workflows are not a problem. I always lusted after Caligari on the Amiga (!!) so getting it (sort of) now is amazing. I'm looking forward to almost realtime animation rendering.

To save ONE realtime image from Workspace you should use the File Dialog to locate or create a Folder, include the name of the image and image type for instance .png, and check "Save sequence starting with" = 0. Select the Render button. Next time you enter Render to File that number should be incremented by one. This is so your first image is not overwritten. If you are using Vista look in it's Help files for Taking Ownership of Folders and Sub Folders. I have choosen C:/ and all Sub Folders.

Solved the problem. Vista UAC strikes again!!! Unless I run TS7.6 as adminstrator I can't do a DX render to file (although everything else works). If I sign in as the adminstrator still no luck (unless I run TS7.6 as admin). I even took ownership of the app and still nothing. So now whenever I use Truespace I have to give my admin password. This has happened on other apps and turning off UAC causes other more annoying problems. Now that that is out of the way let the fun begin.

By the way I am amazed/thankful at how helpful everyone was on what was essentially a "you just press this button" kind of question. Very much appreciated.

Is it directory dependant (ie does it depend where you are writing the file to)? I find that with UAC I sometimes can't write files from inside apps to certain directories (eg root of C: drive, C:\programs etc), but I can to others (eg "Tom Images" or something that I create myself). Ran into a similar issue with Camtasia at one point.

Anyway, thought I'd throw that into the mix in case it helps any. Yes, you are right about this community, they are an amazing group of individuals who pull together to really make a team :)

Thanks!

Tom

I must admit i binned UAC a long time ago, and amazingly it hasn't caused serious injury of death as Vista might like you to believe :)

When I first opened my new PC with Vista32 installed on it, disabling the UAC and Taking Ownership of my C:/ drive and all Sub Folders was the first thing I did. Hated that! I have never ran any application in Administrator Mode neither and so far never had the need to.

Hi again,

I come from the Linux world and I was always comfortable with administrator/root accounts. So UAC was not much of a change. And for the most part it has not caused too much trouble for me. After I started using another app (GeoControl) that also always required admin rights to run I tried turning off UAC but it had been on for so long that when I did, my preferences on almost all my other apps disappeared. So I thought "too much trouble". I turned it back on and just put up with admin rights requests. What really annoys me is that there seems to be no way to get around it. I've assigned my regular account complete ownership of the app and its files and it still asks. I've run them signed in as administrator and it still asks. Truespace was the first time that a single feature rather than the whole application that wouldn't run. Oh well...

This is a good article about the UAC:
