Is there a faster way of drawing a line around an simple object like a cube without having to draw one, turn the object ,draw another etc?

Look at the "Add Loop" tool. It is on the workSpace side.

I tried using the Lasso tool but nothing happens(??) I drew a line around a cube but it just disappears once I come back to the beginning.

The lassoo is a selection tool, letting you select faces, edges or vertices that you are going to manipulate, and not a tool that is actually drawing or adding geometry. Think of it as being the same as the lassoo in Photoshop and other 2D packages, you draw with it to select an area to work on. All edges, vertices or faces contained within the shape you draw are selected once you complete the lassoo (which can be none if you didn't encompass any whole edges, vertices or faces).

There is a specific tool you need, named Add Loop which will add a loop of edges that go all the way around an object. It takes a single click, the program calculates the loop at right angles to whatever edge you point at. You don't need to start by selecting anything. Look under the actual Point Edit tools rather than under the selection methods to see this tool (a search in the manual will turn it up if you want to do some reading, see screen grabs etc - remember you can search the entire manual from any single chapter, just tell the Adobe search routine to search the folder and not the current open PDF, and it will search the whole manual).

HTH!
