Hi
The tutorial on Character Animation (http://www.caligari.com/products/trueSpace/ts5/Courses/Newcharacteranimation.asp?Cate=Training&SubCate=Older) by Oliver Rohe involves using a character calleed "Learner", which he very briefly shows how to make at the beginning of the tutorial.

I had some trouble as a beginner doing a much more complex-looking character in another tutorial Character Modelling, which however is not animated.
I have learnt that some body parts like joints, the hand, the head with eyes, ears, mouth, etc, which are to be animated are quite complex to make & so require making sure everything is done correctly from the beginning in order to avoid lots of trouble later - which can be quite discouraging for a noobie.

Anyway is there any DETAILED tutorial on making him or even the character "learner" itself somewhere?
I know I can give it a try myself by trying to make the character that I see in the videoclip, starting with a "cube", but such a statement by the author "Show how I create the Face and the eyes and Teeth as separate objects", show the possibility of getting stuck, because of not knowing how to make those parts as one should leading to wasting a lot of time. (In the tutorial, there's just a summary & no step-by-step explanation - I am aware I ultimately have to make such a character soon or later))

Below is a screenshot of my imitation of the character in the videoclip, which is also very basic. As it appears, especially the joints, are they ok for animation? As you can see, I am not far yet, moving upwards.

If I am not mistaken, this clip link http://www.caligari.com/products/trueSpace/ts5/Courses/wmv/characteranimation.avi shows what the end result should be, at the end of the tutorial.

Regards

So long as the geometry is made of squares, at least mostly if not entirely, then adding SDS will work out right in conjunction with animation. It may be difficult to get the mesh to bend right without having enough geometry. Not really much of a character animation expert, but that's just my two cents.

Ok so I have done some work in the meantime.
The first picture is a screenshot from the video on Character Animation in the 1st chapter - summarizing how to create the character to be animated.

The lower graphic shows the far I have come. I think I have tried ...

I have a few questions, though, based on this statement by the author, Show how I create the Face and the eyes and Teeth as separate objects.

I created the head, not separately, but by sweeping(?) the neck & then playing around with it. I hope that is no problem.

I think regarding the eye, I will use a sphere & then place it in that socket area. How, though does one create teeth??

For the mouth, I was intending to select the "edges" in the center & pull them inside, leaving it, slightly open. Is there any better way to do this so I get a character, roughly like the authors, since as much as possible, i want to follow his instructions, being new... ?

Based on what the final animated clip looks like (link: http://www.caligari.com/products/trueSpace/ts5/Courses/wmv/characteranimation.avi), is there anything that needs to be changed on the character as it appears?

The next chapter is on creating bones and that and other subsequent chapters assume one has got the character right.

Any specific suggestions will be very much appreciated

Making it all one object shouldn't be a problem. I would say make a tooth object seperate and stick it into place, maybe. Not really sure how to do the mouth though.

Have you checked out the character creation videos here (http://www.caligari.com/products/trueSpace/ts5/Courses/NewCharacterModeling.asp?Cate=Training&SubCate=Older)?

Thanks for your input. :)

I did the tutorial on Character Animation, but being one of my very first ventures, it was not easy, especially the face.

This my second & expect for a couple of hurdles what I gained before has been of great help. I have gone quite a long way

I found a way of making teeth which look like those in the authors tutorial video. They seem to have been made out of a cylinder, which was then contorted & had the add subdivision tool applied on them. The same seems to have been applied to the eyes.

The character should be in one of the scenes from the resources folder available as a link from the course page , you would have to download the zip , extract the contents , then open the scenes in the model window.
