Hi
I am doing the tutorial at http://www.caligari.com/products/trueSpace/ts5/Courses/NewCharacterModeling.asp?Cate=Training&SubCate=Older, now at Chapter 19, involving creating the rest of the body.

The author of the video tutorial now & then tests the object by using the mirror tool, which shows the complete object.

I have noted that I get something looking like a membrane between the 2 halves, which I feel should not be there as I do not see it in the authors example, as shown below - in the picture on the right:

http://www.orbit.890m.com/membrane.jpg

This membrane is only visible when one looks at the object from the side shown. From the right side of the picture, it is not visible.

What causes it and how do I avoid it IF it is not supposed to be there?

Thanks in advance

It looks as if all your points are not in the same plane - see left most picture, up at the top right, a part (the very last part of the polygons) looks like it might be sticking out. Mirroring on that will cause problems since the points are not all in one flat plane.

Grab the face and then scale it down in the horizontal direction to compress it until flat. Or use a plugin (I forget the name, but someone will remember!) that works on Model side to do that. Or enter a value for any stray polygons using the info panel to place them all in exactly the same plane.

When done, you also need to ensure you use the option to delete the mirror plane polygons (otherwise you end up with an "internal" set of polygons that you don't want, and that will cause problems with UV mapping or SDS).

HTH!

Hi

Thanks for the quick response.

I would be grateful to get some specific instructions on how to go on.

I have actually been stuck here for days while to trying to get a home grown solution :o

About grabbing the face, do you mean selecting that part l

http://www.orbit.890m.com/scaling.jpg and somehow using the Point scale tool to get that interface to be perfectly perpendicular? If so how exactly do I do it?

How/where do I locate stray polygons?

How about deleting the mirror plane polygons? Are they something different from the "faces" in that plane in between, that are formed during sweeping? I have been deleting those, using the Erase Vertices tool

Thanks again

Turn off Mirroring. Enter point edit by right clicking. Select the mirror face. Have a look at the Object Info Box. The Size values. One should be zero. When one is zero fine. When not then you have this stray vertices. And then you have to set this size to zero.

One way is to turn on scaling in Point Edit, then scale this face until it is really flat with 0.000. Remember that you can block axis for that so that you just scale in one direction. Right click at the Point Edit scale tool ...

Another way is to try to type in 0.000 in the Object Info Panel. This way doesn't always work though. But sometimes does. So always worth a try.
