I am having trouble understanding the curve editor in the drawing editor.

I can select points on a curve and the handles but when I click and try to drag the point, the point does not move until I release the LMB. During this time, the cursor is hidden so accurately positioning the point is not possible.

Grid mode appears to be toggled off.

What is preventing me from just clicking and smoothy dragging a point on a curve in the drawing panel?

Update:

I got it to work as expected but have no idea what made it work.

Also I find that the navigation widget seems to control the object instead of the view and can even navigate inside a toolbar. Is this a feature?

The first problem sounds like a video card gremlin. I searched high and low for a setting that would affect how DrawPanels updated and didn't find one. If it happens again try changing the draw mode to something like 'Draw objects as transparent outline' and see if that kick-starts it.
For some reason I remember a settings panel somewhere with the option 'update on release', but now I can't recall what tool it was for.

Not sure what's going on with the view widget moving objects, that's very strange. When you say 'objects', do you mean points on the curve or regular run of the mill polygon based objects?
Are you using hotkeys and switching between Object move, etc and Eye move?
The view widget always tries to be 'in front' of any object in the scene are you inadvertently grabbing part of the object's cage widget that's behind/overlapping the view widget?

Draw Panels can be tricky if they completely fill the screen and the view doesn't allow you to click and drag in an 'empty' part of the workspace.
If you are zoomed in so close that you can't see any edges of the DrawPanel, it has been known to 'act funny'.
Note that you can select a point, move the cursor off the panel, and then click and drag to move points.

Thanks for the reply.

Regarding the navigation widget moving objects in the Model side, I believe that what was happening was that sometimes I would miss the click target on the widget and actually click-drag in the space. In the Model side, this apparently moves the selected object.

Yes, I observed strange behavior when the draw panel was larger than the screen. In trying to use the navigation widget to back out, I sometimes saw that the portion of the screen occupied by the pop up tool bar associated with the draw panel was scrolling around.

After much trial and error, I was able to get some results.
