Inconsistencies between tutorial videos and my layout // New Users

Hi all,

I am using TS7.6, and have downloaded the "Getting Started With Truespace" series of videos by Paul Ashington.

I'm frustrated because I can't find quite a number of features that are outlined in the video. In particular, ch3 "Libraries and History Stack", I am instructed to use the default layout - I assume that that is what I am using seeing as I clicked on the Default tab at the top of the window. So that means that I should be using the same as the video.

Some of the things that appear to be missing are :

(1) A toolbar at the top of the library stack on the video - not present on mine. This toolbar neatly categorizes all libraries available.

(2) Context menus - right-click on the library title bars to pop up a short menu, available on the video but not present on mine.

(3) Many more layout tabs along the top of the workspace window in the video than in mine.

(4) Click on the arrow to the left of the layout tabs (top left of the window) - in the video, it drops down a list containing items such as Layouts, Preferences, Scenes; on mine it opens a dialog box entitled "Assign TABs Library".

Any help appreciated.

regards,

Andrew

I would download this one instead to start...

TS has been updated since that video you refer to and many UI changes took place. Watch the older ones later once you get your feet wet. The older tutorials will just confuse you at first. The "Player" is now "workSpace" for instance and the look is different now.

tS7.6 brought with it significant improvements in the layouts - and of course we couldn't go through and rework all our older courses. Rather than just take them away though, since they still contain useful info, we left them there, but yes the interface will look a little different.

Good advice below, to start with the newer course to get to grips with things, then when more comfortable with the interface and more comfortable with making the translation between older layouts and newer layouts, then dive into the older courses. You might start with the Bitesize videos here on the forums too.

Thanks, I will try that set of videos as you suggest.

It had occurred to me that I may be dealing with a different version of TS, however all of the differences that I observed seemed to indicate that the video version contained all of the enhancements. That seems back-to-front to me, seeing as I have the latest version.

I'm looking at the Organic Modelling course, have got about 3 videos into it. Its already talking using about the vRay material editor - which I discovered wasn't available to me. When I looked into this a bit further, I discovered that this was an expensive plugin at around $259. Seems a bit inappropriate to have this as a routine part of a beginners course, when its an expensive add-on.

PS Thanks for the heads up about the Bitesize videos - they look good :)

As far as I remember the course does not require V-Ray - it may mention the editor, but that should only be as an optional item. I believe all the texture work done in it (only placing the images on the planes, no other texture work is done) is done using the real-time shaders. Let me know if that's not the case and in some way the editor is required, or even if it just sounds that way :)

This is the section that mentions V-Ray. To me, it doesn't seem at all to suggest that V-Ray is needed for the tutorial. I think he is just showing that depending on what is selected, the panels in the stack will reflect the properties since he says that since the plane has a DX9 material, the DX material editor will be displayed when it is clicked on using the material inspect tool.

Find the Material Inspect tool in the tool bar and click on it. This initially brings up the Vray Material Editor in the stack, which is something that we will go over in more depth in a later chapter. With the inspect icon still active click on plane. Since this is a DirectX 9 material the inspect tool will bring up the material's panel in the panels tab of the stack view. If this had been a Vray material, it would have instead filled in the VRay Material Editor with the sampled values from the material.

As a side note....I'm waiting (almost) patiently for the next installment of this fantastic course.

Thanks for posting the relevant part! Yes, it is just to let people know that if you have V-Ray, this is the behavior you will see. In both cases, whether you have V-Ray or not, you end up in the DirectX version of the Material Editor and then you follow the course from there.

Thanks!
