Newbie Question re "Selecting Faces" // New Users

Hi all,

I am a new user of TS7.6, and have been going thru' one of the video tutorials. It talks about the "pick and paint" and the "select faces" buttons on the toolbar, and also it talks about the face turning green as soon as you select it.

I found the "select faces" button, selected a face and clicked on it. It did not turn green, however one of the widgets appeared alongside that face. I was also able to perform a sweep so I concluded that I successfully selected that face.

Finally, I've gone back in and have now noticed that nearly all of the buttons on that toolbar have now lost their color, i.e. they are now monochrome (they were colorful before).

My questions are

(i) Where is this mysterious "pick and paint" button ?

(ii) Why doesn't the face turn green when I select it ?

(iii) Why did the buttons on the toolbar go monochrone ?

Thanks in advance for all help.

regards,

Andrew

The pictures will tell you the stroy.

You need to be in Point editing mode, to do that you need to select the object you want to edit, than right click on it.

Now just follow the pictures and you should be ok.

Good luck

Thanks, but this is not happening.

I'm trying to reproduce the scenario outlined in the pe.wmv tutorial video (under the folder PDFMan/resources). I'm trying to do exactly what the video is telling me what to do, and what you are telling me what to do - all to no avail !

It's not highlighting green, but the widget appears to attach to the center of the face when I select it.

I'm using that cube with the circular bumps on it (from the base objects library), as is the tutorial video.

I'm not sure this is what you need, but here goes: after selecting the faces you need painted, find, click and hold the 'paint-palette' drop-down 'til you see the 'brush' - select brush and you can paint any face (and only 1 face per click) with any material you have selected. Material selection in Workspace is a little more complicated, if you're playing around, remember to hold the Cntrl key while clicking if you want to load textures that are not in the stack menu.

It might be helpful to use Model side to get familiar with the process, it's basically the same over there, the difference being that the 'brush' is part of the 'palette' menu (when you find and click on the 'palette' in Model side, it's on the left side of the Material Editor when it opens)

Thanks, rrf, but no this is not what I am talking about. I'm after the effect where the face turns green when you click on it, to indicate that it has been selected. I'm not actually trying to paint it.

So with the Stack/Panels opened I load the Base Cube into Workspace. I select the Select by Painting tool which starts Point Editing. I can then select any face and it highlights. In the Mesh Editor Settings shown these are the default colors for highlighting etc..

Then I'm thinking you should check the 'stack' (in Workspace). Check the 'Mesh Editor' settings that come up in the 'Panel' when your model and face is selected, and the opacity settings for them.

rrf and TrueBlue,

yep, have the same setting in the Panels tab when I drag the cube on to the workspace. I have "Select By Painting" and "Select Faces" selected on the toolbar.

It still point-blank refuses to highlight any of the faces in green when I click on them.

Andrew

Try and Reset to Default Context and see if that clears things up for you.

Could be a graphics card / graphics driver issue, could you post your system specs and driver version here?

Try other related things too btw, like making edges and vertices visible, see if that works.

...also, same problem seems to occur if I select edges or vertices.

I should also mention that I downloaded the latest driver for my video card, and it does not seem to have made any difference.

Thanks, but that didn't help either.

Geeeezz ! ... how hard can this be ?

I would say not too hard in this case :) The card specs reveal the answer - trueSpace7.6 requires DirectX9.0c, but the Radeon 9200 is an older card that only supports DirectX8.1. This would affect the highlighting in the real-time display when in Point Edit mode (as well as real-time shadows, shaders, etc).

You could try changing the settings to use only DirectX8.1 under the tS7.6 File -> HW Settings menu and see if that helps (try Pixel Shaders 2.0, 1.4, etc, and work down the list of available modes).

Alternatively, you could pick up a newer graphics card that runs DirectX9.0c, anything in the last 3 years should do, eg things like the 7600 should still be available in AGP and probably turn up for around $30 - $60 at a guess (though AGP cards seem to be higher priced compared to the newer PCI-E cards - of course you may have a PCI-E slot too as well as the AGP, in which case you can pick up things like the 8800 or similar for $100 or less).

Thanks Tom, I tried setting it to Pixel Shaders 1.1 (the accompanying comment says that it supports Radeon 8500 and upward graphics cards). It didn't seem to make any difference.

However, when I restarted TS, the hardware settings kept springing back to Pixel Shaders 1.4 (implying I can't really go below that level). According to the comment, Pixel Shaders 1.4 support Radeon 9500 and upwards - so I miss out on that score.

Hmm, odd it keeps resetting. It may not have helped anyway, since the shading for the selection may be dependent on 9.0c. Anyone else have any trouble making a change in setting "stick" there, in case this is some bug or error, extra feedback would be useful from others.

Could be that there is little choice other than upgrading the card :( That said, it should be very economical to do these days and clearly you'll get a boost not just in tS, but anything else with 3D would benefit too.

Tom, can you suggest any graphics cards in particular?

Looking for economical but nonetheless good, obviously. Also, need a card which won't interfere with other graphics programs that I play with - they are GIMP and Ulead Photoimpact for 2D, and Poser, DAZ|Studio, Bryce, zBrush and Wings3D for 3D.

I know Poser and DAZ|Studio both use OpenGL, so I'll need a card which supports the up-to-date version of that as well.

thanks,

Andrew
