OK, i'm probably part of the nightmare of millions of users with absolutely no idea of what they are doing, trying to make a full-scale 3D animated movie with the newly freed Truespace software. :o

Where is someone supposed to start who knows very little about this kind of software? Is there a book that explains step-by-step somewhere?

I'm pretty good at following directions, and have downloaded all the instruction materials i can find - all the tutorials and tutorial videos and even the bite-size menu changer - anything to help me get going on this software. My experience following the video for the first part of chapter 1 was very good. But the remaining sections in chapter 1, where you have to rely on just the text - failure

Specifically, i'm unable to follow the PDF file "ch1_IntroTutorials.pdf". For example, in "1.2 NURBS editing in Model View", i'm able after an hour or more to make something remotely near to what is depicted, until i get to step 9. Step 9: Copy the resulting teapot two times and paint two copies with different materials. Glue all three of them together and select the Render Object option. Not bad for a few minutes’ work! Now there has been no instruction on how to copy, how to glue, how to paint, how to get different materials etc. etc. (and the "few minutes" dig twists like a knife - ha!)

No doubt the manuals are made for someone upgrading from a previous version of Truespace. Fine. What about for perfect newbies?

What is frustrating, is to see that the software is good enough to do what i need it to do, but not being able to get started to do hardly anything.

What is the first scene of your movie?

What kind of objects and or props objects will it require.

I would start by creating some primitives and that will help you get familiar with the icon menu.

Create a few primitives, drag and drop a few textures from the library to the objects in workspace mode,

There are mainly two modes in TrueSPace, Model and Workspace.

Model is used mainly for the nurbs and lightworks rendering.
Workspace is used mainly for the newer parts of TrueSpace like new bones and realtime dx9 rendering .

Right click on the objects to enter point edit mode and edit the object by selecting faces or points.

You can copy and paste objects using the cntrl c and cntrl x respectively.

It may take a few days to become familiar with the tools, but you should be off and running in no time.

ALways remember we are here to help you if you get stuck.

Thanks again and Cheers

Welcome to TrueSpace:)

Thank you mrbones.

At least this is a start :)

Before i get down to really working on making the movie which i estimate will take 2 - 3 years if done by myself (AFTER i figure the software out), i want to just doodle around a bit, to see how the various tools work. So this advice about creating primitives and dragging a dropping some textures is a nice start. I don't understand the difference between Model and Workspace mode, but i'll just follow your directions.

See how newbies like me get frustrated when paste is a ctrl-x? Now that i know, no problem, but in all other programs i've ever worked with, it is ctrl-v.

A little introductory manual, or preferably, an entire "Dummies" book on how to get started would be very nice. Can you write books? :jumpy:

Thanks again for your assurances - here i go!

Whoops,

I meant cntrl V for paste.

Sorry about that, I am fumbling in the dark on my keyboard..:p

Another tip is in workspace view, you can hold down the mouse key as you scroll over the tool icons, as you do you can see all of the icon tools for each set, that will help you become familiar with them faster.

I have created a couple of starter tutorials and I will see if I can find them for you.

Cheers

Too start try to find the easy object in your animated movie like a rock, chair,a door even a your computer is easy to do. Once you have the interface down pat then go to like Organic Modeling the fish tutorial is a great starter, When you finish with that tut you should feel comfortable with the TS. I find it to be the hardest thing to learn is the interface. You may want to read the manual two times to start with.

I am on my forth reading of it and I still don't know nothing. But I am finding it easier to get a round TS. Like mrbones said we are here to help you if you get stuck.

Here are some basic flash tutorials I have created

How to open librarys, load objects create text and other basic operations.

http://www.truebones.com/Tutorials/basicstartandlibrarys.zip

http://www.truebones.com/Tutorials/futureTS7.5.zip

http://www.truebones.com/Tutorials/physmoverecord.zip

Last one shows how to animate a character using the phys move tool in realtime with procedural clips(Advanced technique I came up with)

HTH cheers:)

Another thing to practice is setting up camera angles and lights, more of that later..

I had the same problem with the tutorials, I remember the teapot one and having the same issue...they tell you to do something but don't show you how to do it!!!
