Your going to have to turn off that blinking signature before someone answers. If you want to be annoying... it worked.

Play nice now. Nothing like being let down when asking a question on a legitimate Caligari sight. If you can't help me, then please don't be rude !!!

Who was rude?

A few of us merely pointed out that your signature was difficult to look at (it was!) and I was only having a bit of fun with your screen name, especially given the nature of the forums.

A bit like Mr Big. who is often played (for a cheap laugh) in so many gangster movies by a small or short bloke.

Many forums have a nasty condescending tone, that is why I like it here so much...there isn't much rudeness just people with a good sense of humour...:D

As for your question (now the sig is gone) tS has a paint tool which allows you to paint different colours onto an object but it is not as effective as texture mapping....:D

It is next to the material editor on the same flyout as the geometry paint.

It has been know to crash my system though...;)

My GIF was meant to be humorous.....sorry if it caused any siezures !!! As far as my name goes, your right.....the irony on my side is that my name is Ed....thus Mr. 3d (in colaboration with three-D);).....and thus my picture (Mr. Ed the talking horse)!!!
I have no problem painting or adding texture to the entire model.....but that's the problem...I can't figure out how to paint my legs one color and my body another (painting seperate objects on a character). I've tried the lasso, etc...
It would be nice if it was as simple as Paint Shop Pro.

give 3DCoat a try, you have to have the UV maping of your object done before but it lets you paint texture onto your model with brushes like photoshop.

LOL, now that is funny....:D I should have spotted that from your profile where you use 3 as an E.

I still say texture mapping is your best bet...using the UV editor. You can of course use the lasso tool to select polygons then use paint face. Would that work?

3d-Coat has a uvmapper built-in, and it looks pretty good (roughly equal to blender). That's the problem with this app, it changes too fast.;)

Can you offer some help Steinie, or is that the best you got ?

I'm still struggling to get the UV mapping to coordinate with my paintbrush. I'm in the right area, I'm getting close,.....I just need a little more direction (a video would be great !!!).

I'm with transient - I've only messed around with the demo but 3dCoat does a real nice job of automatic uv that suits organic models very well. The downside is that unlike trueSpace 7.6 it costs real money. There are other mapping options though - uvmapper (free version), wings3d has some useful uv tools, blender/road kill (I think its called).... etc. As far as tS onboard mapping goes - can't say as I've ever figured out how to use it effectively!

(BTW your original name thing really twisted my melon man! - glad its gone.:D)

Lots of ways to make legs different color from body, depending on what you are going for.

First, make one color in the material editor. Now use Paint Face. Paint all faces one by one on legs. Change color in material editor. Now use Paint Face again to paint all faces one by one on body (you can click and drag to paint over the faces).

Next, color 1 in the ME again. Select all faces on legs by whatever means you choose (rectangle tool etc). With those selected, click Paint Face. All selected faces are painted. Color 2 in ME select all body faces, Paint Face.

Next, if they are separate objects - color 1 in ME, choose legs object, Paint Object. Color 2 in ME, choose body object, Paint Object.

Next, make a texture in a 2D paint package. Use this in the ME instead of plain color. Use the painting techniques above to apply a different texture (some trousers drawn in one texture, a shirt in the other) to different parts of the body. You'll need to get into UV mapping to get this to work properly.

Next, UV map the whole body as one,and just use one texture across the whole body. Your 2D image will have the various parts laid out, so you'll be able to see the texture for the trousers in one part of the image, the texture for the shirt in another part of the image, etc).

So, quite a few ways, depending on the results you are going for :)

HTH!

Tom

EDIT - it's not really possible to paint the texture directly onto the model in tS in a stroke by stroke fashion - to do that, you need the external programs as mentioned (ones which effectively bring the functionality from a 2D package into the 3D space).
