Hello,

I've been working on a project where i have a object made of metaballs. The individual balls move throughout an animation. I need to change the color of the Mb object at one point in the animation, but tS7 won't let me do it in a conventional manner(simply selecting the object, painting it, and adding keyframes in the timeline.)

I've tried making a simpler project with just two meta balls, and it worked fine. I've also tried using the texture animation bar that is built into the texture tool, but I haven't had much luck. Are the numbers in that tool equivalent to keyframes? How do I get the tool to actually paint the color animation onto my object? I've been able to get it to work randomly, and haven't been able to grasp exactly how it functions. Also i couldn't find detailed info on using it in the manual. However, I'd prefer to use the standard timeline to animate the color change on my object and not the texture animation timeline.

Also, it there a way to increase the geometry on mB objects? Mine seem a bit jagged and clunky when animated.

Thanks,

David

Hello GazO

This should work, i think you are using wrong sequence.

Add key frame before using paint-over tool to change the colour.

if you right click a metaball icon (ie sphere\cube etc) a little box should pop up where you can set Render Resolution.

Thank you Saul,

I was able to animate the colors using the timeline, I was just thrown off because the model display did not reflect the color changes. I had to click the render frame button to see the actual color.

Also thank you Chester,

I changed the object quality to 5 using the Object render options menu. It appears to have made quite a difference.

thanks,

David

In tS 6.6 you will see the color or texture animation in real-time only if you have the "procedural textures" option turned on in the DirectX settings window. Right click the DX icon to access. Not sure if it's the same for tS 7.

The texture animation function in the texture editor is better suited for applying an animation as a texture; as in using a cloud animation applied to a sky box. This way you can key specific frames of the texture animation to keyframes of the overall animation.

You may be able to animate procedural textures using the editor's animate function but like you said; it's easier and more intuitive to use the paint roller at different key frames.
