Hello.

Does anybody know how to add decals in TS5.2?

I'm trying to add a small decal in the middle of opposite sides of a complicated, textured object.

If I use the "Material Rectangle" tool then I get about four or five material rectangles appearing on various planes of the object when I click the "New" button. They all move and resize as one, and the logo appears in everyone one of them when I click the "Apply" button, so this option is out.

The object has a different texture on every side, so I've also thought about adding the decal as another layer to the existing texure, but I'd have to add a lot of white space around the image of the decal so that it appears at the right size in the right place. This means the decal texture would be very large.

Am I missing something obvious?

Can anybody help?

Cheers.

Re-size the decal within the texture to make the decal texture map (and trans map) a sensible size. ie, resize the decal to fit the texture size you want rather than the other way around.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I thought of doing that but if resize the decal to fit the texture won't I lose definition on the decal? i.e. it'll end up looking a bit pixelated.

I'm going to give it a go anyway.

Thanks again.

The material rectangle is entirely dependant on the UV mapping of the object, so if you have problems with multiple decals then the answer is in the UV mapping.

Material rectangle is also likely to show two versions of the decal - one on the front of the object and another on the back - even when working as expected.

Yep, like Bobbins said, it sounds like you've got either the wrong type of mapping. Probably cubic. There are a couple of workarounds. One would be to apply the textures to each side independently assigning planer mapping to each if it will work, and then applying a decal to each side. I'm pretty sure this will work.

Even better I think since you say this is a complicated model would be to apply it to your texture either as another layer in the material, or in the texture itself (if it is an image).

Thanks everyone.

The shape object I've been trying to stick a decal on is an octagonal block which then turns into a bullet shape at one end.

I've added planar-mapped textures to each side of the octagonal section and a cylindrical-mapped texture to the bullet section. No problems there, but when I added a "material rectangle" to one of the octagonal's sides, two "material rectangles" appeared on every side, including two on the bullet part.

I've now followed the suggestions of both TheWickedWitchOfTheWeb and ed_baker and added the decal as an extra texture layer to the required face and it looks very good!

Thanks for all the help everyone.

Hello, What do you do when you try to move the decal and it moves in the opposite direction ie. you move mouse to left, the decal goes right.

I know this is an easy solution, but I still cannot figure out how to do it. Bobbins states "Material rectangle is also likely to show two versions of the decal - one on the front of the object and another on the back - even when working as expected."

In a top view, it seems as if I am moving and sizing from a bottom view which makes it a bit difficult to place the image where I want it. Any help as usual would greatly be appreciated.

This is an excellent tuturial and it provides a great many lessons. It doesn't however, tell or show me how to move an image around on one plane. I have found a work around and that is in Material rectangle, I turn on or off the U V so I can move the image around. This is still a pain cuz my brain and hand is moving the mouse one way and the image moves the opposite way. Very distracting. I couldn't imagine how I would ever "map" a texture to a more complex object that a box.
