Can someone help please, I simply cannot get the 'Draw Trimming Curve' tool to work.

To simplify the problem I tried drawing a simple NURBS cube and then drawing a simple random trimming curve.

The appropriate toolbars appear but no matter how much I click the 'Trim off Inside' tool absolutely nothing happens. The Caligari Artist guide says that the Trim off inside tool should cut a hole in the patch.

Not in my programme! Zilch!

This is driving me nuts, surely I must be doing something stupid!

Ought to say, I have tried reinstalling TS7 to try to get it to work.

Do you have shadow casting light in the scene? I am presuming you have a default scene with no shadows and a plain grey material. Without shadows you cannot see the contrast between the 'cut' edge and the inside of the cube. Main image is after cur but with no shadows. Turn them on and tilt the light to about 45 degrees and you get the inset picture.

Hope this helps you.

Thank you splinters,

But I cannot get anything like that. After many tries all I have is a curve drawn on a nurbs object. Surely if it was working at least I could select the inner section and delete it!

I am sure that the NURBS cube remains intact whatever I do. It is driving me to distraction, I have tried placing lights in all directions but whatever I do it still looks like a solid cube.

You are only drawing the curve on the upper surface of the cube. Draw it on the bottom as well. I used blend surface afterwards to connect them.

Suddenly blinded by light, thanks guys. I think the problem is that I am so used to working with 3D solids that I always think that when I project a curve it cuts through the material. NURBS patches are surfaces and therefore the trimming curve is really only defining an area that can be used for other purposes - such as offsetting or extruding the shape.

Must admit, don't know why it doesn't cut a hole in the patch, as that is what th emanual says it does.

Still need to think a bit before I will really get it but on my way.

Hultek43 you will see from my post 'Conversion pack 2.1 TUrboCad/TS7' in the Tech Forum that my design work is really all solids. I use TurboCADCAM for direct manufacture of parts through NC machines and therefore only really think in solids. Need to relearn to use TS7. Still puzzled.

Try clicking the No Trim icon, it's a toggle. Also you can use the Curve to Patch Projection. You can position, scale & rotate projection
with real-time feedback plus it's re-useable.

Must admit, don't know why it doesn't cut a hole in the patch, as that is what th emanual says it does.

do you use the 'close trimming curve' tool to finish your curve..? that is how it completes the curve, then it will work..you cannot put the last point on top of the first to close..

Thanks Stan and SteveBe,

I am used to drg/CAD progs that offer a + sign or similar when you get close to a node point, also the Guide doesn't mention the 'close trimming curve' tool.

As I mentioned earlier I am used to solid modelling so surfaces feel a bit artificial to me at the moment.

Ahhh, Stan's sight is better than mine, I didn't spot that.:D

You can also right click after last point and that will close the curve as well.

lol..doubt my sight is better than yours SteveBe. .I just thought it might be the issue, as Riftvalley just mentioned other programs have that ability..if you don't close the curve it doesn't even give you a warning message when you try to trim..:)
