What 3D devices are out there? Right now I'm using only a mouse and K/B, but am looking at the 3Dconnexions SpacePilot (latest version). Unfortunately it seems it is not compatible with trueSpace (not on their list of apps:confused:). Could someone point me to a compatible device? If you do use a 3Dconnexions product with trueSpace, please let me know. Thanks for your time!

Pretty sure someone wrote a program to enable trueSpace to use this device. Not sure where I saw it though...:o

Found it: Trueball for 3D Connexions stuff;

Have fun-would be great to know if this works with tS7.

Those 3Dconnexions devices look ineresting, but there's no way I'd pay as much/more for a fancy controller than I did for tS! [I got tS & also proTeam when they were on offer, plus the exchange rate helps too :)]

Maybe this will help:

Thanks for the help. I was looking at the SpacePilot but didn't want to drop $400+ on it. I agree with Alien, that's too much. Thanks to splinters and trueBlue for the link. I've found the software I was hoping existed. I'm going to order the Spaceball 4000 FLX (about $30 - 100 depending...). That'll tide me over 'til the SP drops in price and I'll make sure it works before spending the big $$. I'll post again to let you (splinters) know how it works out.

Thanks all!

Where from, ebay? Cheapest non-ebay source I saw for 1 of those was a refurbished 1 for $159. Not interested in 1 for myself, never really liked trackballs, just curious.

I'd like to use one of those 3D navigation devices too. I posted a request on the 3Dconnexion website and received this reply

Hello LazeeGazzz:

Thanks for the feedback. It's always helpful to get this input to understand what customers and potential customers are using.

We will have a new SDK and program, which we think companies like Caligari will find interesting. We will put them on the list of companies we will approach, and if you would like to also send them a note, I'm sure it's good for them to hear from customers as well!

3Dconnexion, Inc.)

It's not that these devices are incompatible with trueSpace, just that none of the developers have got around to implementing it yet. Even if those good folks at caligari are too busy sounds like 3Dconnexion may do it for them. All the major players are catered to and I don't see why we can't have the latest bells & whistles too.

The trueBall.tsx was never finished and remains incomplete (God bless the independent/enthusiast developer for their hearts are in the right place). 3D connexion has an entirely new product range so it isn't really relevant anymore. Regarding prices, their introductory product, SpaceNavigator Personal Edition comes in at $59/£39/59Euro which won't make the Alien bankrupt:D. It's cheaper to buy new than seek a 2nd hand device on eBay.

Check out their stuff here http://www.3dconnexion.com/ . If you want one make your voice heard otherwise absolutely nothing will happen. Remember, your App needs you! Help bring trueSpace finally out of the 21st Century and put in the 22nd Century where it belongs;).

I want one. You guys can help me:) .

I know all sorts of things in tS can be hot-keyed, if movement in the various axis [axes? not sure what the plural form is] can be set [e.g. Ctrl+ mouse move in the specific direction] it'd be simpler for 3Dconnexion to make something similar to what you get with Saitek gamepads. Hmm... may have to see if I can get tS working with my P2500 (http://www.saitek.com/uk/prod/P2500.htm). If it can be done as I've speculated above it would have even more possibilities to control functions than the SpaceNavigator [2 analog sticks - 1 for scene navigation, the other for object rotation, & an 8-way D-pad, etc :)], & it only cost me £20. :D

Not as cheap as my gamepad though. :)

Yep, that would definitely give trueSpace the 22nd Century GUI I was shouting about. You could connect up the 'rumble effect' to the collision tool and the 'quickfire trigger' to fire off bug reports direct into caligari central. Well Alien, I think you should use your superior extraterrestrial knowledge for the good of humankind and do it. May the Rumbleforce be with you:p .

:D Except for the bug reports & rumble effect it doesn't sound too difficult, as it would just require assigning shortcuts to various functions in tS, then just using the software provided by Saitek for assigning those same shortcuts to the pad's various functions... in theory. When I get chance to try it I'll post my results. :)

As for the Rumble Force, it might be doable, if it's controlled via DirectX [which I think it is], but that's [way] beyond my abilities. If someone created a Rumble Force node for the LE, you could then [theoretically] hook it up to whatever handles collision. As the rumble function is variable [10 types, IIRC], you could maybe have 1 for collision with ground, another for collision with other objects [or maybe just specific objects], etc. Again, it's all just theoretical, & beyond my abilities, but if someone wants to have a go at it, I'd be happy to test it out. :)

Oh, also Hultek43 reminded me about LiveWire (http://users.iafrica.com/l/lk/lknit/3D.htm#livewire).
LiveWire is a Fly-By-Wire system for trueSpace 3.x.
It captures joystick AND KEYBOARD motion and applies it to the currently selected object in REAL-TIME.
You can fly, drive or move any Object, Camera or Light around your scene, WHILE IT IS ANIMATING!
You can create an unlimited amount of layered animation as well as...
Complex Realistic flight/driving scenes with many planes/ships/vehicles
WALDO style robot arm control
Interactive LIVE scenes
Complex sweep paths
LiveWire has true Inertial Motion and can capture joystick motion with up to 65535 increments of precision. The theoretical maximum capture rate is 1 frame every 1 millisecond. (varies per system).
Using LiveWire you are fully interactive with your animating trueSpace 3.x scene.

Livewire will drastically reduce you animation planning time.
Just climb in the cockpit/driver's seat and GO!

I haven't tested it properly yet, just tried to see if it would even load in tS 7.11 without crashing either itself or tS, which it did. [I'll test it a bit more thoroughly later] The page I linked does mention a newer version of LiveWire "Coming Soon", but as the page hasn't been updated since 2003 I wouldn't get your hopes up. :(

If I knew tS would support it I would order the SpaceNavigator straight away for a measly £39. It looks like it could be very useful for long hours in front of the screen...;)

Whoops...ordered one anyway.

Still, on the 3dconnexion forum someone wrote a program to allow you to bind the functions of the navigator with any mouse/keybard input for any program.

apparently it works very well.

Can't wait to test it...:)
