Maybe I have the wrong end of the stick but I can't do something with a standalone deform object that I thought I could. Simply it is this:

- load a standalone deform object

- create 3 keyframes with varied squash and stretch effects

- attach the standalone deform object to a mesh object as per the instructions in the manual

- hit the play buttom and watch the object deform ........

.... except it doesn't!

The standalone deform object morphs between frames but the object it is supposedly attached to does nothing. I've been messing with this over the past few days and sometimes I manage to get a deform on the mesh object at one of the keyframe positions but it doesn't deform between keyframes.

I'm trying this in 6.6 and 7.1 without success. Any clues, tips, tutes etc would be most welcome.

Thanks for the cute little scene - nice demonstration. I have made similar things myself but unfortunately that isn't what I am wanting to do at the moment.

I'm trying to keep the mesh object positioned on a specific point and have the deformer stretch and squeeze around it. It is possible to set key frames for the deform object and play it back no problem ... but I can't get it to deform the mesh object at the same time. If you playback the attached scene you will see the standalone object stretch and squash but the sphere remains completely static. (And before anyone asks yes I have clicked the "Start deforming by stand alone deformation object" button and selected the objects as described in the manual.)

Like I said at the start perhaps I have the wrong end of the stick and it simply can't be done that way. Can anyone confirm or deny?

Well, here's your scene after playing with it. I may have moved the sphere slightly. You do have scene checked in the animation playback properties panel:confused:

Try using a Standalone Deformation Pipe, rather than a SD Object.
I was able to keep the object stationary and move the SD Pipe and have it deform the sphere.
Using the SD Cube, it would only deform when I moved the object.

Sliding the deform object up and down regarless of whether you use the deform pipe or the deform cube will deform I have not doubt about it but that limits the kind of deformations you can use to wave like pulses - like parastalsis in the digestive track. Creating deformation the way I've been trying to do it is potentially more flexible. Can I ask again - is it simply not possible to do what I have been trying to do with the deforming object tools in tS?

I get to answer my own question (hell ... where did that egg all over my face come from?) anyway thanks to hultek43 for giving me the clue. The mesh has to begin deforming right from the start. I still found that I had to use the "start deforming by ..." button on the first and last keyframe before I finally got some animation going on. I need to do some more experimenting on this before I can be 100 percent certain of what goes on. Cheers to those who answered - thanks for your help.

Attached file has the thing kind of working. I put a wrapped checked and bumbed pattern on to make sure that textures stuck to the warping mesh correctly - they do!

Don't know where the attachment to my last email went - I'll try again.;)

Hello,

I am having a similar problem, but I haven't been able to fix the problem yet. In my project, I am moving a deform pipe off of a pipe to give the impression that an object is passing through a tube.

When I scrub through the scene editor, the animation plays properly, but if I hit play nothing happens.

In my animation, I am only animating the position of the mesh, but the motion is key framed to move from the first to the last frame.

Does anyone have any idea what my problem could be?

Thanks,

David

I tried to save my scene so that I could share it with the forum, but when I save the scene the "deform pipe" disappears. Without the deform pipe, the rod fails to distort properly as the "spore" passes out the end.

I've attached the file incase anyone wants to give it look anyway.

thanks,

David
