Other than "lens flare" (which doesn't seem to work) I have not found any info on how to make a light visible - as, for instance, a street light in a night scene.

Can someone suggest where I might find info in the manual - I have not found anything in the lighting chapter.

Thanks as always.

We always used to put the light inside a piece of geometry - a low poly sphere works well - then make the geometry non-shadow casting. This has the added benefit that you can assign a high luminance shader to the geometry and change how it looks too. Will that work for you?

Sure it works !

Lens Flare effect is easy to create in tS.

I even often use it over simple pictures (I mean with no 3D), just because I find it more easy to use than Photoshop's Lens Flare !

Try this :

1- Create a local light

2- Open its light option panel and clic the Lens Flare Effect For The Light icon.

3- In the render options bar, clic the Glows and Lens Flare effects, r-clic to open the full options panel.

Thanks to both of you. For this project, Bobbin's suggestion to use a shadowless object with high luminence worked perfectly. I was even able to tint its color a bit to match the color of the light output.

You should be able to preview and adjust the glows/ lens flares/ depth of field/ tone mapping in the Post Process Editor. This handy tool gives you a small rendered preview of the currently selected view where you can see the results of the current post-process settings and adjust them to your liking. It's been a while since I ran tS5, but I *think you get the PPE to open by right-clicking on the post-process icon in the rendering options toolbar.
EDIT: It's also possible in later versions (and possibly in 5.x point releases) to render what's behind the PPE rather than the entire scene- this is handy for spot checking smaller areas rather than rendering the entire scene.
