I have spent a fair amount of time studying volumetrics, and advanced volumetrics, as well as fog and depth cue and I am unable to make shafts of light. The volumetric settings seem to treat all fog (smoke, dust) as the same with no difference between air that is in the light beam and air that is not.


Has anyone ever seen this done with TS? I have found no examples. If anyone knows of way or where I might hunt further, I would be very grateful.

I always use advanced volumetrics and either spot or projector lights for best results. If you are not seeing the 'shafts of light' I suspect you have not enabled shadows for the lights.

Here are a couple tips:
Turn on shadowcasting for the light you want to cast the 'shafts'.
Also turn on Volumetrics in both the light properties panel and the Scene Render Options.
You'll want something like a window or doorway to throw the light thru.
Adjust one parameter at a time, using area or scene render to check the results- plain object render won't properly display volumetrics.
You can increase the default intensity of the light by right clicking the slider. In the resulting panel set the intensity numerically or by dragging the double-headed slider. The default limit of 2 is often not bright enough.
Also important is the viewing angle between the light and the camera- and also having something dark for the shafts to show up against. Don't overlight the scene with secondary lights or you may wash out the volumetric shafts.

Or this? Done in Truespace 4.3 some years ago... Volumetrics take a lot of trial and error - I spent days fiddling with this one, took me considerably longer to get the lighting sorted than the modelling as you end up running so many test renders... as I was quite inexperienced, it didn't occur to me to remove some of the high polygon geometry whilst doing the tests!


And once you've found some good settings, make a note of them somewhere you'll find them later! I have no idea what settings I used unfortunately.

Spot on Nez, I often load up a scene where I know this setting worked and re-use it...:D
