I find myself constantly changing layouts, to have access to the different features. However, in some occassions I open a window or toolbar I would like to keep open when changing layouts, but when the layout changes, the toolbar or window disappears. You have to save your layout any time you change it. If you just want to update the current layout, rightclick on the layout in stack view and choose "replace layout".
