Color Map

Texture Map

I think I know what a Texture Map is, but am unsure what a color map could be.

And how does a color map affect UV?

Like, If I import an object into a program and it tells me there is no color map assigned would I like to assign one.

What exactly is it asking me?

I have no idea what a color map should be (at least in trueSpace), but don't get mixed up with materials and uv's. See my reply in the other thread.

I tried to google this to find an answer for you. According to this source http://www.webreference.com/3d/glossary/texture.html

a texture map is a colour map. I always assumed that the two names meant the same thing although I've sometimes seen procedural colour shaders referred to as colour maps.

If you can't tell from the context wether they mean 'texture map' as used in a colour shader or a procedural texture used as a colour shader then a simple bit of trial and error should clear this up for you.

Hope this helps.

Hmmm, I 'll get the exact text they use and post it here.

Here it is:

"There are no Color Maps assigned. Would you like to create a color map and assign it to all the materials?"

I imported a modified primitive into the program and was going to paint it. This message comes up when I click on the painting tools.

There is also a differerent spot to import texture maps.

In the Material manager it shows where you can import the following:

=======================

Channel Color Map Strength

=======================

Color White NONE Blank

Bump (blank) NONE 1.0

Transparency (blank) NONE 0.0

Displacement (blank) NONE 0.10

=============================

Then under the above table it has a choice for default Color Map it says 4096x4096. Which happens to be the same as what my Default Texture Size reads under General Preferences.

I'm confused. :)

I have never seen those message in TS. Did you make something in TS and trying to import what you did in TS into another program or did you make something in another program and tried to import it in TS?

No this is another program. Trying to decifer exactly what a color map is or isn't.

Because, even if I paint on the surface of an object created in tS, it will ask me if I want to assign a color map.

Ohh, just wanted to be sure that I was not missing anything :D , regarding color map vs texture map, they "generally" mean the same thing. From a graphics concept perspective though "texture" usually refers to color, displacment, reflectance, etc... making color a subset of texture. In TS this combination of shaders is what we call a material. Other programs may call this surfacing and it goes on and on. In TS we have a collection of shaders called "color shaders" with a "plain color" shader being a choice and (too potentially make this more confusing :D ) a "texture map" shader, which is an application of an image in the color channel, in other words your object gets it color values from an image as opposed to one of the other methods in which it can get color.

Like W!zard said earlier, you will know from the context of how the term texture and color are used, what is meant as it changes.

doh!

I feel like a left-handed monkey in a right-handed glove store. :confused:

Okay, I suppose I will get the hang of this jargon eventually. Meanwhile, does anyone have any hair replacement ointment? :)

kidding...:D

Just found out from the designer of the software that a color map is a texture map.

Evidently it gives you an option to load in the texture/color map where there is none detected on the imported object.
