I had some questions on the Scene that came with a ts6.6 tutorial called ShadowCatcher.


How is the wooded background done? Is that just a plane against the back, side and bottom painted with a texture?


And secondly, how are the shadows cast from the pottery on the ground.

The background image is an image used as a background. A plane (or another object suitable) must be created and painted with the shadow catcher material for the shadows 'to be caught' on(or by). :)

The shadow catcher shader is great fun! Set your background image using either the appropriate background shader or by mapping your background image onto a plane or cube.


The shadow catcher shader is painted onto a plane you can use for your 'ground'. The plane renders invisible except for shadows giving the illusion that your object is casting a shadow on the background.


In this image there is a 'ground' plane which I have lined up with the apparent ground plane of the background image and painted with the shadowcatcher shader. The wall, triffids plants and rocks are all composed as usual and when rendered the 'ground' plain is invisible except where it appears as shadows.


When used in conjunction with an IBL (Image Based Light) it's possible to insert any object you can model into any background picture you like....


This can be a fun way to add objects to Terragen images, photos etc.
