Hi,
is it possable to change the object axis for sub components in an object? For instance, if i have a subdivided cube, perhaps divided into 4 segments per side, and want to move the top row of verts along the x axis i have problems depending on what coordinate system i am in.
in world axis the verts all respond in a similar way , no problem.
in object axis the interior verts move in a similar way, but the two end points move along two diffrent planes. It appears that the verts are associated with diffrent object coordinates systems. Do the sub-object sides have diffrent object coordinate systems?
I would like to use the object coord system as in some instances the object will not be rotated such that the world axis will have a lot of meaning.
Thanks

The way the verts move as you are describing may have something to do with the surface normal of the face they are connected to.
The way I have gotten used to modeling is to have a few views open. If you want to precisely move something, say, along the x-axis you should use an ortho (no perspective) side view and disable movement along the y and z axes. (NOTE: Be sure you select the vertex move tool BEFORE disabling axis movement.) Then you can use a regular left-click drag (The problem you describe - I get it sometimes when doing a right-click drag, which usually moves along the surface normal.)
Basically, I would not move things around in perspective view. You may move some vertices around and they look fine - until you rotate around the object and see they are in fact out of whack.
I hope I've helped at least a little. :) Please let me know if you need clarification.
Also - another little tidbit: I still do most modeling in trueSpace 6.6 (as I can't quite get trueSpace 7 customized to my liking at the moment) and I use a LOT of hotkeys. They help me to model very quickly with as little clicking of icons as possible.
This may be too-much-information but I thought I'd share the main ones I use for modeling if you're interested.
Space Object Tool; right click for object info
Q Eye Move
W Eye Rotate
E Eye Zoom
A Object Move
S Object Rotate
D Object Scale
Z Point Move
X Point Rotate
C Point Scale
R Point Edit: Edges
F Point Edit: Faces
V Point Edit: Vertices
Ctrl E Add Edges
Shift Q Quad Divide
1 Use Object coordinate system
3 Use Screen coordinate system
2 Use World coordinate system
Just looking at the list may not make much sense, but where they all fit together on the keyboard is very intuitive to me. |

I can't recommend this idea highly enough! Frank is right (although my Hotkey set-up is diferent to his in detail it's the same in principle). Any effort put into understanding this approach will be rewarding - I can't imagine trying to model without hotkeys! |

I used my nostromo speedpad for hotkeys a while back. I kind of forgot about that. I think it worked good from what I remember. I tested it with TS7 a little and it seems to work. I think I may spend some time setting it up again.
It's really nice actually. There are over 100 programmable keys and it fits nicely in your left hand. Less cumbersome then a keyboard. :)

Ahhh...hot keys. :)
No wonder my time with tS has been challenging. :)
I have what my friend calls a "3 mouse hand." I can put 3 mouse (mice?) under my palm and you can't see them. So I tend to klutz the keyboard quite often.
heh. Couldn't figure out why it would automatically go into those modes sometimes. Now I know to keep my finJers off the keyboard. :D |

Either you have huge hands, or have a collection of those really small laptop mice. :) |

Thanks for the help.
I know exactly what you are talking about using the ortho views. The hot keys will be very useful.
thanks again
