Hey guys!

What I find myself doing lately is trying to keep my models simple yet by the time I'm done modelling, I have unecessary geometry in the model and it winds up lacking that appeal of the original sketch or clay model (yeah - I sometimes model them in clay first.)

Anyhow, I believe I have succeeded with this one. When I look at the 3D model I like it as much as the pencil sketched version that started it. It's simple, yet contains enough geometry so as to subdivide well. Also, I put the emphasis on the edge loops around the mouth for animation later.

Only the head is done for now. I spent a few minutes making the model and then decided to duplicate it for a family-picture postcard type image. LOL! Maybe that's why I don't finish my models - too many test renders.

The depth-of-field was accomplished with DOF Pro 2 and a depth-map (z-map) rendered from Primitive Itch's depth renderer plugin.

Please let me know your first-impressions of the character, style, etc...

Thanks!

Thanks Nephos, Parva & Viz!

Viz: You crack me up!

Parva: I also check out Boring3D on a regular basis. I like the clay/plasticine look his characters have. They seem tangible. Very cool.

Thanks Kujisha, TheWitch, Splinters, & Dele!

I sure appreciate the comments on the image! I plan to post updates as I progress with the rest of him.

He isn't nearly finished and already I want to rig and animate him. LOL!

Thanks again, guys!

So you're going to make a body for him? You could just quit while he's a head!!;) (Sorry I couldn't resist that)(obviously).

This is an excellent character - so simple and yet potentially iconic. Very exprssive. Well done.

Thank you! I'm thinking of making several, varying the basic model a bit (via scaling, object deformation, etc...) to make a few different characters. Was also wondering about adding some type of cartoony hair.

....?

I'm considering how to handle the head animation - the teeth in particular. His mouth shapes will be done with morph targets and mixed with STM2, but the situation I'm looking at is how to get the bottom teeth animated properly. Some would boolean/weld the teeth to the face mesh and have the teeth deform with the rest of the face (ie. for the Jaw_Down morph target, the teeth vertices and jaw vertices would all be moved together)

BUT...I'd like to keep the teeth as 'sharp' geometry, excluded from SDS smoothing. Also, after doing a union of the two meshes, I'd have to go in and join edges inside the mouth.

The solution I have in mind is to use a face skeleton on my MotionStudio rig. The bottom teeth would be controlled by a jaw bone. The top teeth, of course, would simply be fixed to the head bone so they move exactly as the head moves.

When animating the mouth, I could go in passes. First I'd animate the morph targets, hitting the opens and closes. Then I'd animate the jaw bone, matching the movement of the bottom row of teeth with the vertex animation of the bottom of the face. Last, I would go back through and finesse the vertex animation of the face, making sure the teeth don't 'break through' on any frames.

Hrm.... just ideas at this point. That may change when it comes down to it.

Hi Frank,

Here is something I tried to do with facial animation, all by hand. No Plugs.

Cheers

Reminds me of the old black cat clocks with the eyes that go back and forth. Scary, Mr. Bones! LOL!

Nice, smooth face morphs. What plugin did you use?

None used Frank, However on this one I used a script to control the eye gaze direction and blinks.

Cheers

P.S. This was just a test, nobodys nose bridge was harmed.
