Post WIPs and comments for the Feb09 MMC here.
You may also start your own individual entry threads if you wish, but post your finished entries in the finished entries thread (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=7752)
for simplicity's sake when it comes time for voting.
Deadline for entries will be 12:00 midnight on February 23, 2009, which will leave 5 days for voting.
"Yesterday's Tomorrow"
-i.e.- "Where's my Atomic Flying Car?"
What did the visionaries of yesterday imagine for the future?
Did it come to pass? Are we still waiting?
The best entries should have a futuristic theme, but a retro style.
Some search terms you might try to get the juices flowing:
Pulp Sci-Fi Magazines
Chesley Bonestell
Predicting the future
World's Fair
prophecy
visions of the future
steampunk
leonardo da vinci inventions
Jules Verne
HG Wells
Nikola Tesla
Thomas Edison
Aldous Huxley
George Orwell
futuretro
Utopian
Dystopian
Futurism

Now that is an awesome topic! I have a fascination with the odd timewarp nature of the future as seen from the past. It also gives me the ideal excuse to quote "How beautiful it was tomorrow" a great line from the great song "50 Years After The Fair" by Aimee Mann, which indeed is all about how the future looked from the past, exactly the topic of this contest (in the case of the song, the view of the future as presented in the New World's Fair in NY). Neatly chosen, Space!

Many congrats on your win spacekdet. :jumpy:
Great idea for the MMC too and I have a couple ideas up my sleeve. Dunno if I will have enough time to enter though with everything else I'm working on but if I can't, it won't be for the lack of wanting to. |

Looks lie there aren't very many entries yet. And it's been a week! OK then. I have almost completed my current project, and will start a WIP inspired by the cartoons of the day.

I'd like to participate but I don't have the self discipline to do trueSpace stuff and still meet real world responsibilities.
I have a book called "Yesterday's Tomorrows" and it is about exactly this subject. Duh.
If I get a lot of real world stuff done then I might try to do something from the book. Otherwise, no TS for me. |

This is an awesome topic and I hope I can find some time to try something....
When I was doing my Masters some years back, I read a book with a collection of short storeies (4 I think) written in the 50s about what they thought life would be like in the year 2000 - very interesting to see which ideas had been achieved (or even exceeded) and which we were still some way off achieving....
It's also good fun watching 'vintage' sci-fi movies/series - a potential gold-mine of reference material (and dreadful special effects of course!) |

Just adding my name to the list with the 'Jester flattening press.'
Think I'll finish this in real time or vray on the workspace side as it handles poly heavy scenes with ease.
EDIT: added URL

I don't have a problem with entrants running their renders thru a post process filter in their 2D image program of choice in order to enhance the 'retro' look.
It's about making art, not being a slave to the render engine.
If you want it to look like an oil painting, go ahead and filter that puppy!
Is everyone on target to finish by the deadline?
Since it's a short month and a tough topic, if desired we can bump the deadline up by a few days and shorten the voting period if people think they can use the extra time for finishing touches.
I really didn't want to run over into next month because that crimps the schedule, but a lightning round of voting might be preferable if it means more finished entries.
Thoughts, suggestions? |

Good!
I was gonna do it anyway, cause I'm a rebel. :)
To hell whether or not I get a single vote! :D |

Space, in all honesty, an extra day or two would be handy as I can only finish this off now in 7.6 which I don't have at home only at work, which means I'm done for this week and will only have Monday lunchbreak to finish (subject to next question about timezone)...
Having said that, if everyone else is happy with the timing, then I don't see why I should hold it up, as I was late starting, so it's my own fault.
I would be grateful though if you could confirm what timezone your deadline applies to as I'm on GMT - I don't want to find out it's suddenly ended just before my lunchbreak on Monday for example...
NB - I assumed that a bit of photoshopping was acceptable in the MMC - this about the final image/whoile process after all, not just modelling, but realise not everyone agrees... I only expect to use post for compositing zrender passes or multipass effects like glows etc if required... |

Considering I put the final touches on my second scene last night, it doesn't make a difference to me one way or the other. If Nez and anybody else wants to bump it a couple days, I have no problem with it....heck, it may inspire me to 'try' and whip out another ! |

After studying the calendar, how about this:
New Deadline for posting your finished entry: Friday, February 27, midnight.
Since time is relative, that'll be midnight my local time, which is UTC -5.
Voting will be open over the weekend Feb 28/March 1, and the poll will close 11:59PM, Sunday March 1.
Entrants, get your topics ready for next month's MMC.
If you win, you'll be ready to announce it on Monday March 2 and that will leave 30 days for the next contest.
This will allow maximum time for modeling, minimum time for voting, and only chump the March MMC out of 1 day. |

I think I was the last entrant, but like Nez has already stated in his post, that is my problem. I'm more than happy to go with the flow and just submit whatever I have come the deadline you determine. |

Well...I had an idea to do a Flash Gordon scene (it's funny to me that Marcel kept bringing him up after my notion !), but I can't seem to find enough motivation. I've been trying to create more rigged objects for animation, but keeping the skin from overly stretching beyond my acceptable parameters is also becoming a loosing challenge. For a 3D noobie, I still managed to create 2 more pieces of art work inside of tS for this challenge that I am proud of :)! |

Just a reminder, if you haven't already done so, please post your finished entries in the thread linked here (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=7752).
The deadline is in about 11 hours.
After that, I'll pop up the poll.
Voting will run just thru the weekend so don't delay! |
