Ok I like doing the abstract contest. I liked the last one where there was no set topic like car or something like that. So give your best Salvador Dali impression. Rules are standard, except you cannont copy one of his paintings. It has to be all yours. Contest will end on January Sunday January 24, 12:00 GMT. This will give one full week for voting. And three full weeks for working!.

How about a model of a Salvadoran Deli? :D Oh well, couldn't hurt to ask.

I am still on the fence about whether I am in this month or not.

Well then if more people don't like my topic then I will change it. We will just have to see.

My indecision is not based on the topic. I think it's great and it will be a challenge but with it being the new year, I expect work to be more hectic next month I may not have time.

Oh I see...well I will still wait it out. I want there to be a nice turnout. So I may have to reset the topic.

Nice idea rjeff

My minds messed up enough to probably be able to do this lol

I just hope I have time.. I kind of committed myself to doing a cubic room tutorial but that should only take up a week

Okay count me IN. I don't know anything about Salvador Dali. This should be interesting and educational.

rjeff, do you want me to start a WIP thread or wait until you determine if the topic is going to change?

Edited my faux pas: Van Gogh did the Screamer, not Dali!

Well goahead and make your WIP. Even if we just have two do it that is fine. Weevil I think you would do well in this. Just for fun go and google him.

Drippy Clocks weird supported body parts, fish or insects for no apparent reason, elephants with stick legs or a head made from spheres. A surrealist artist who's work was sometimes influenced by Dr. Sigmund Freud theories. Born in Spain but later moved to the United States was very popular in the 50's and 60's.
This will make an interesting MMC.

well.. for inspiration, Click this link (http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=Salvador+Dali&btnG=Search+Images&gbv=2). I'm not sure I'm up to snuff on this one, but I will try some things out and if I can get things going then I will start a WIP. I'm more of an Escher person myself. I think it's the way I see the world or something.

EDIT: also here is a quote that may help anyone trying to enter -
If you look at the point of view of “expressionism,” then paintings in general are supposed to emphasize the expression of inner experience rather than a solely “photographic” portrayal of reality. It is subjective emotions and responses that objects and events arouse in the artist. In surrealism, it goes one step further: it’s the unconscious that is emphasized, and paintings express the workings of the mind by using symbolic imagery and interesting juxtaposition of subject matter.

Steinie this is right up your alley..as well as JamesMC. Both of you have a very "abstract" mind. Heck James lemon glider would fit right in here!

Some more fodder for your dreams: here (http://www.salvadordalimuseum.org/home.html)
and here (http://www.salvador-dali.org/dali/coleccio/en_index.html).

PS, Edvard Munch did 'The Scream', not Van Gogh.

OK... I THINK I can do this. Surly a toy-centric person like myself can look DEEP, DEEP within and find the surreal.

My Official January MMC Wip thread is HERE (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=7493)

Wish me luck!

Wow, folks who haven't heard of Salvador Dali? That surprises me - I can understand if folks don't like his work, but not to know who he is does indeed surprise me :) If you don't know his work, surely you'd know his moustache.

I actually really like his work, it appeals to me, and usually I am an out-and-out realist in my work, so that is interesting. His methods of working were also interesting, how he searched for inspiration (catching the dream state just as you fall asleep, by having a penny drop into a jar to wake you at that point, and then painting the imagery that arises from that).

We had something similar many many years ago, with the Dada inspired contest. There was some forum discussion that the works that resulted weren't really Dada at all, but either way it produced some fun imagery that is a bit different from what you normally get out of 3D :)

Looking forward to seeing what people come up with on this one! It definitely puts the focus squarely on the artistic more than the technical, which is perfect for an MMC.

HTH!

Good topic. This will encourage creative images and spur use of different techniques to produce unusual shapes and objects.

I can't participate though. Too busy. Too bad, I have a idea for an image.

@rjeff -- How about a "January 09 MMC - Comments" thread?

A comments thread isn't really necessary for the MMC as we can comment on the topic here and on the entries in their specific WIPs - it's different in the SMC where all the entries are posted in one thread, with comments in the other....

cool topic, not sure I'll have time unfortunately. I like Dali, and Escher, as it happens, although my wife's not keen on my hanging the Dali print in the house as she's not a big fan and it would be hard to explain to my toddlers....!

Here is my WIP with the final render.

http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=7497

This scene is based on the foundations of life:

The Tower in the center of the scene represents "self". The tower sits within a pool of radiance which represents our own "self esteem". They both rest on a pedastal which represents our personal "ego"; However, all of this rests atop the four basics of life (food, clothing, shelter, love). The rotating globes represent the forces that encircle our lives and play a direct role in who we are and why we do what we do. The mirrors represent the "reflections" of our lives; our memories. They also represent how others "view" us. You will notice that the tower has a different look on each side in the reflections. That is because people view us differently based on how they perceive us. The clock face represents the passage of time. As you know there are 12 months in a year so the number 12 represents the years of our lives passing by while everything else goes on around us.

The snowglobe sits comfortably atop a table for all the world to see or to quote a more popular saying "all the world's a stage". The reflection of my son looking into the globe represents our youthful side, no matter what our age is. There is a part of us that remains "forever young" as we look at ourselves introspectively through the reflections in our own snowglobes.

And here is my entry. We have a tumbled landscape as if the natural world is going overdrive to shrug off the efforts of mankind to change it. Note the hint of roads which suggest that there is a pathway through this modern puzzle of ethics. An even number of buildings all straight lines is for mankind's attempt at order. Then we march the genetic eggs around to show that no matter how mankind tries to "crack the egg" there can always be unexpected consequences. The butterfly wings on the eggs are there to show the beauty intended. In the background, the clouds are delicately framing the hope of a better tomorrow while a disturbed cloud above shows the uncertainty of the present.

After admiring Dali's melting clocks and his self promoted early marketing logo "the elongated Dishonest John mustache" the Dali Diner was born.

I feel it is safe to say Renoir, Matisse, or even Monet would describe my art as "drippy eggs over easy"

very nice ideas guys, imaginative and creative :)

after having a brain wave yesterday while doodling with pencil and paper in a boring meeting, the doodle has grown into a full A4 sized abstract drawing which I suddenly realized would make a GREAT Dali impression...

i know I have very little time left but I'm going to test my low-poly-speed-modeling skills and see if I can convey the essence of my piece of doodle art (will scan it in for reference ;) ... )
