Sketched up a concept for the idea for my scene.
7785
The upper right hand corner is supposed to be Warp point thingy, there's a large ship docked on the docking ring of the space station, some shuttles traveling back and forth to the planet, and two inbound medium sized vessels.
It's fairly ambitious so it'll be interesting to see how much I can get done.
Feedback is welcome.
Hope to see some more concept sketches from other forum members taking on the MMC challenge! :)

Lol! "Warp Point thingy" - good to see you've got a handle on the correct terminology Jack!
This looks interesting - I can see it has the potential to be quite something.
I find it especially interesting as I never use 'concept' sketches for a scene (though I do use reference photos for some of my models). For me the rough idea of the image is already in my minds eye. It'll be interesting to watch your project develop. Have you decided which renderer you're going to use yet?
I did some work on my own project last night and will start a WIP thread later tonight. |

Thanks Wizard :)
Unless I run into some problems, it's going to be VRay for sure. I find that the concept sketch helps me flesh out and visualize the idea. It also helps with deciding how to break the project down into smaller tasks.
I think this challenge's topic plays well into your strengths. Can't wait to see what you come up with. :D

Cheers Jack - V-ray huh? I've not seen a lot of spacey scenes done with Vray - lots of 'glass tests' and 'caustics' experiments but not a lot of finished scifi scenes. I'm looking forward to seeing the result.
Yeah the topic does sort of play to my strengths so I've decided to make it really challenging for myself. I'm going to aim for doing the whole project using the DX9 realtime shaders - I figure it's as good a way as any to force myself to learn something new and step out of my comfort zone. I'm off now to post a WIP thread of my own.
Anyone else out there going to take up the challenge? |

Whooaa Jack, you better remove your picture immediately! Your showing the new Caligari Beta Control Widget in the top right of your drawing....:D
Cool concept work.
Should we post our work here or should we all start individual threads?
I wonder what Render engine Prodigy will use, hmmmmm
Count me in W!zard. Outer Space, Inner Space, Office Space, Parking Space.....decisions decisions.....
W!zard this challenge or the DX9 challenge? I did the Violin using DX9 and liked the immediate feedback you get. |

My understanding of Jack's challenge proposal wqas that we all start our own WIP threads - that's what I've done anyway :D .
DX9 Challenge? I know nothing of this DX9 challenge of which you speak - did I miss something?
Great to hear that you're on board Bob - I can't wait to see what sort of twist you'll put on SteinieSpace!
(We now return this thread to it's regular topic ;) ) |

Good idea to sketch it out Jack. Say, you didn't happen to be near Roswell NM back in the 40's did you? ....

LOL you had me there for a minute, Steinie! I scrolled back up to make sure I hadn't posted something with the unreleased version of TS! Then I realized you meant the warp point. :p
I think separate threads will be easier to follow. I'll add them to the challenge page as people put them up.
BTW, people are welcome to change their entry concept at any time up until the voting and are welcome to enter more than once entry, but we will need an 800x600 image for each entry fort the gallery -- a link will be added to the WIP page too.
Thanks Froo, actually Fantasy is more my thing than Sci-fi, but Sci-fi gives a broad choice for people of all skill levels to create interesting images.
I think Vray should be well suited to Space scenes, it's just a mater of using the right light types. Light in space usually uses infinite lights for distant sources like the sun. GI could use a background image or be set to black or near black for background light. Etc.

This looks really cool and interesting Jack!
Lots of activity going on in it, and if it were real there certainly would be.
I like the elegant shapes of the ships a lot too, looks very advanced.
It's probably gonna be tough doing that atmosphere around the planet, especially in Vray, I'm sure you'll find a way to do it well somehow but I sure couldn't do it myself!:o
Where can I get shuttle tickets for this scene?

One other quick thought on this,
Délé just put a few really cool "Cluster" scripts up in the forum here which scatter cloned objects in various cool and controllable ways, and I was looking just now at that neat star you drew above thinking if it were composed of distant clustered objects similar to some which Délé added as example renders for his "Cluster" scripts, and then those objects were made semi-transparent and glasslike with a beam of light aimed at them the effect would look very much like your drawn star above, even rendered in Vray.:)
Might be cool to try it anyway?!?

Thanks 3Dvisuals dude, I've been thinking about how to implement the sun's corona. Probably going to end up painting the effect on an alpha mapped plane... but a particle approach might be a good alternative.
The planet is definitely going to be two spheres. The atmosphere will be alpha mapped for transparency. I will probably bump and specular map the planet texture so that the ocean is more reflective than the land.
I'm hoping to have some time tomorrow for roughing out the shapes. Looks like the ships and spacestation should be relatively easy to model. The UV mapping and texturing is what's going to take the most time. I think... ;)

Finally got some modeling done, this one's gonna go down to the wire.... sheesh.
Anycase, here's the Starbase. I'm still cutting holes in it to access the hollowed interior and the antenna stuff needs to be added.

I may need to add Hard edged texturing(to the current texturing) and modeling to the list...seeing these updates has inspired me(I hope that didn't sound bad...I meant in a good way...). |

That would be great! Jack has a style I can immediately recognize, usually low poly, clean mesh and cool texturing. His current project is another fine example of his skills. |

Not that much progress. Mainly adding loops and detail so the model will SDS ok. I may just go with it as is though depending on how much time I have left after finishing the other parts, just minor details like star ships and things, lol ;)
Added the light/antenna towers at the top:

I set edge color to black, and moved the slider about a fifth of the way. That and 4xAA is all it is. Just a screen grab from workspace. I like that look for showing off my models because it shows the wires and almost looks like some kind of blueprint visualization.
Glad you like it. I need to kick things up a notch if I'm going to get the modeling done by the deadline. I'm worried that I'm not going to have enough time to do a good UV job. :(

I didn't even catch the Deep Space Transport in the original concept drawing. You might consider time extension or submit as a WIP and just keep working on it. I have to admit you've got some work ahead of you!
Real nice work Jack so far. Go Jack Go! |

Thanks Steinie!
Procrastination got the better of me and I don't think I'm gonna make the deadline but gonna make a good go of it. ;)
About extending the deadline, I'd have to extend the contest for a whole month though or the dates would get messed up. So unless there are others who will enter or need more time, probably best to just let the time expire and vote on the projects as is.

Got all the shuttles modeled....

I'm thinking about using the displacement tools to create the land on the planet to save me some time on texturing...
So next part is the Warp Point.... :D
Then the great texturing rush.... LOL

Alrighty... I changed up and went with a more traditional approach for the Warp Point/Stargate thingy:

Just need to make the planet and then it's on to the texturing... :D |

Bummer no time to work on this today, so I'm going to have to call it done for now. I'll finish it up after the voting completes. |

Forgot I needed an 800x600 image for the submission, so took an hour and put together a hidden wire image of the scene as completed:

I am going to ask Norm to set your message as non deletable! :D I really want to see this one completed. You also get bragging rights...your planet/moon sphere is bigger then mine...;)
I like everything about this one, nice job Jack! |
