Well Nez...I see you did find time for the SMC. I noticed how you sarcastically noted how you always like to support your own contest. Me....I'd rather give the contestants their options for creation, rather than possibly enter what they might have intended and steal their thunder. I also thought it was rather raw that someone in the past would enter several submissions in their own contest up for voting....and almost won. I also think it's raw that some people have 3 votes in their pocket, giving them a 3 to 1 voting advantage.
These are just my thoughts.......and it would also be nice if more people would step up to the challenge for this month's MMC;):)

You know, it's just a challenge - nothing else.

Who are you saying has three votes in their pocket?

If you are going to make ludicrous comments, prepare to back it up.

Listen now....I have constantly put my hand out there for friendship, and it keeps getting smacked down. As long as I get pushed, I'm going to push back ! All you have to do is stop. Nez pointed a sarcastic comment in my direction, and I made TRUE observations and points that needed to be said.
Seems like you got your energy back James, so why not finish your MMC project ? It would be nice to see you back in !:)

Lots of reasons I don't take part, the main one being I am not a speed modeler, I am a very slow modeler. In the time permitted, I'd get nothing interesting done at all :)

Next up is a lack of time - after a long day on tS related topics and items (and they are long days, in a literal sense, not as in a "not enjoying my job" kind of sense!), once that is done I head off to do non-3D things. This is why you don't see any new renders or images or models on my site any more, I've done all my tS'ing in my work hours! My non-work hours go to family, house, and some music and games for relaxation. If I did do some 3D outside of what I already do, it would also go on some pet projects I have, again leaving no time for the contest.

So, these contests are not for me. It also seems fair that they should be left as being for the community and non-employees. Add that all up, and it means you won't see me in any of these contests :)

HTH!

Tom

If you don't want your hands smacked, stop making ludicrous comments about people having multiple votes. It makes you look like a paranoid. You're the only one making the accusation. If you can't prove it, then stop making the stupid accusations. As I said, you appear to be the only one making such statements.

My vision is still too impaired for detailed work.

Extruding, sweeping and bending is about all I can manage for now.

James....why are you so paranoid !!!;)
If you had been paying attention to past posts then you would not question my defense. Please leave it at that. It is apparent that you and 4 others will never intend to extend outward towards my hand, but I will always leave it outstretched just in case !:)

Mr 3D, I'm not sure how to take you. You have repeatedly accused someone of cheating, not once or twice but every month. Then you tell everybody how great YOUR OWN work is and how it should have won. Other times you are a class act and do nice deeds. Please stick to the second part because your nothing but an ass doing the first. If you continue to accuse members here I will do everything I can to get you kicked out.

So do you want to do positive things here or not?

Your really not happy unless your taking a swipe at someone are you 3D. Considering you failed to mention to either the host or forum moderators that the poll in the recent MMC contained an error, and by virtue of that fact the vote was heavily stacked in your favour, you should get your own house in order before you start casting aspersions against others.

True, your very first post had a gif which appeared to have strobe flashing colors, very irritating. Unintentional? You have continually used bold text unlike every other user here, unintentional? If you want to stand out it is working. All I want is to keep this Forum somewhat tame and friendly. I find you a pretty cool dude actually but I don't put up with crap either. So there was nothing personal in my dealing with you or any other person I post about. The really really bad users have moved on. (I can think of at least two).
You have to quit accusing people of cheating, just tell Norm and let him investigate. Thanks.

Jeez, another thread descends into madness whilst I'm off having a peaceful weekend...

Mr 3d - as someone suggested, you must be paranoid or at least overly sensitive as there was no sarcastic remark aimed at you, I don't know where you saw that but whatever you saw was mis-construed.

The remark about suppoorting my own challenge was to be taken at face value only - if you look back at every challenge (SMC or MMC) I've had the (mis)fortune to run, you will see that I always produce an 'entry' - and that it is never submitted for the voting. There are several reasons for this - firstly I don't tend to pick a subject that I don't find interesting myself and secondly - why should I ask folks to model something I don't myself believe is achievable in the timeframe. So I always join in when I'm host.

Originally, by the way, there was no rule against the host taking part and being eligible for voting too but most of us agreed way back that it was more fun for hosts to stay out of the vote to ensure the contest changed hands - although there's only a few of us who've been here long enough to remember that.

As for your remark about finding time to enter my own challenge, well as per the above, I always do, and that was factored into my response about not having time to enter the MMC - I knew I had to find less than 2 hours to create an SMC entry which I achived over my lunchbreaks last week. This is of course a very diffferent situation than finding 10 or more hours to work on an MMC, and I certainly cannot afford that much time on another challenge at the moment.

I think everything else has been responded to by others but I felt I needed to address your concern that I was making some remark specifically at you. If that's the way you read it, I'm sorry but it's not the way it was intended.

You'll no doubt be glad to hear I don't intend to enter any more SMCs or MMCs from now on - so you'll never be able to feel aggrieved by the way I run them, participate in them or how many votes I get... Despite being one of the longest running particpants and advocates of both challenges, it's just not worth the aggravation at present.

Those are not my words, attitude, or intentions.
As far as your sarcastic (with rolled eyes) remark...Man up to it.
And stop playing the sympathy card. Even though I aired out my thoughts about hoping your new SMC changes would not become a permanent fixture, I was still the first to play !:)

As a closure to the remarks obviously aimed at me (by you know who) for entering 2 models in the trophy SMC; then all I can say is that if the SMC were more supported, then perhaps hosts wouldn't feel the need to pad-out the poll with their own submissions in a vain attempt to give the more casual forum member the illusion that the SMC was alive and well and thus worthy of both their interest and their vote. (Edit - if that was a poor judgement call by me then I apologise to those who took part, but my decision was based with the intrests of the SMC at heart and not any personal gain.)

Getting this thread back on track, I'm was very sorry to read your last post Nez and that is indeed very sad news. I have always enjoyed your models and feel I have learnt a great deal from them. I fully understand where your coming from though and must admit to harbouring the same thoughts myself.

I was hoping to support your challenge with a model of a Dyson, but even at an early stage was proving waaaaaaaay too complex for the time limit and it has since been consigned to the scrap bin. I do have a plan b up my sleeve though and hopefully if I get a spare 30 mins today then I should be able to post something.

NICE one Breech...but I usually like your models !
I have yet to toy with glass much on the model side....would you care to share your settings ?

Thanks Mr.3d. Yes, I was quite taken aback by how great the glass turned out myself when it first rendered. I'm afraid I can't take any credit though as the settings I used were just the default settings on the glass material shader. One thing I would add though, is that initially it looked really, really dark and that is my usual experience with the default setting and why I usually have to fiddle about with the settings. Then it dawned on me I forgot to hollow out that part of the model (doh!). I wouldn't have thought it would have made that much difference but it obviously does.

... on the glass material shader.

Can you point that one out ? I've tried it with the "Wooden Doll" Material at full Transparency which is not too bad, but I don't think I've obtained the look you got. I also get a pretty good effect with the "Glassy Cubes" Material, by omitting the cubes (but this is a long Render...which I always try to avoid !;)). Like I said, there's only been a few occasions where I've toyed with it.

Where are you (over the rainbow:D) ?
How do I get the "Reflectance Shader" option ?
It's not the DX9 "Glass Shader", as it wont render out in LightWorks (or at least I don't know the secret).

Wooden Doll, Glassy Cubes.??? I assume these must be DX shader options. Either that or your putting something in your coffee.:D Sorry Mr.3D, I thought you were aware I'm on modelside. I haven't ventured over to workspace yet. Far too scary. Nothing so complex over on this side I'm afraid. To get the glass effect, it is quite simply the same as the screenshot I posted. Open up the Material Editor, right click in the reflectance window to bring up the sub-menu, select the glass shader and then paint object. Perfect glass in just 4 clicks.

Mmm...beer. :p

I know you work on the Model side.
I work on the Model side where the Glassy Cubes and the Wooden Doll resides....

Breech isn't using one of the materials from the built in material libraries as a base - he's just created a shader from 'scratch' using default settings for reflectance and colour as he's shown in his screen cap - there's no need for a 'base' from the library, just start with a default grey material and change the reflectance properties as shown.

Breech - I would imagine the appearance of the glass changed when you hollowed it out due to the significant change that would have on the transmission and refraction characteristics? You'd probably see big differences if you were using TomG's cool glass shader for Shaderlab too, which is pretty awesome for glass (though I'm a long way off working out how to get it doing what I want all the time!)

It's a great model, you're really getting a good handle on the SDS I see; I'd also note your model would make a cool start for a robot character - looks a bit like a robotic dog head (a sleeker version of K-9 sprung to mind!):D

This looks like a cool SMC, have to join in this week. Great idea being clay limited for this round. Now I also think textures show if model is sufficient in complexity to properly use textures for adding depth to a model.

Now for the life of me I can't find a decent Kirby Vac image. Even Kirby home page lacks any images useful. Does no one ever take pictures of their Kirby? Well come to think about it I never did when I had one. :)

Ahhh - thanks for clearing that up Mr.3D. The Material Library icon is just another one of those all too many areas that I don't really explore. TBH, there are probably 20 odd Icons I've never even touched in all my years of using tS. You can see why Workspace frightens the hell out of me. Must make more of an effort to explore all of tS features.

Thanks Nez. Yeah, SDS is fun. Glass BTW, is something I have always tried to stay away from apart from the odd window. Must admit to wanting to experiment a bit more considering how well the render came out. Would love to be able to do glass statues. I think it was Adriani who put up some great pics of something similar a few months back.
