Leave here all your comments and suggestions concerning the SMC # 43, and all rants and raves concerning wind up toys and possible frustrations you had from them in your youth, like broken springs, lost keys and whatever.

I hope to see many entries.

Good modeling

Nice entries already.

Vizu, you don't have to like them, you have to model them :)

I had a free evening last night and the choice was between the wind up toy and continuing my overdue WIP on another thread. Then I saw Nez's brilliant teeth (which was what I thought about attempting since we have a pair which occupy the coffee table downstairs) and stuck with the other WIP. Good job Nez, and the rest are pretty inventive too.

Very nice set of teeth, Nez, you can actually hear them clicking :D

Hope to see some more entries, enough inspiration from the entries so far, I would say.

Thanks guys; Chris, sorry to have stolen your idea! Hope you come up with another that you've got time to attempt.

I knew I didn't have much time this week but wanted to support Georg's challenge, so I thought I'd try a much quicker entry than normal, which is why it's quite simple/crude... should have spent longer on refining the feet in particular but the main challenge I'd set myself was as to whether I could execute the teeth/gums moderately OK.

The principle worked fine albeit it was rather primitive - I should be able to refine the model and process to get a better finish but I now know the concept works, sort of...

Nez -you absolutely didn't steal my idea:) great minds think alike and all that;)

Actually, it happens all the time in science, you have a good idea and find somebody else has already thought of it! Even in my secret ambition to write an SF novel has been twice sunk by something appearing first which basically is the same story. This was why I was so disappointed when I first saw The Matrix (great film) and my more recent idea seems very close to the new show from Joss Whedon (Buffy and Firefly fame) called Dollhouse....I get the feeling that ideas are something that float around in the ether but find more exciting heads to settle on first...;)

I must try and do something, TBH I kinda lost interest when an earlier SMC went a bit screwy so i focused on dumbing things down for a game instead

Haha - you should read some of the Terry Pratchett books if you haven't already - he talks about inspiration doing almost exactly that - so even that idea isn't original...;):D NB hadn't heard about the new Whedon project, will have to look that up...

Nigec - yes, you should get back into the fray.... you'd be a welcome over at the current MMC too (hint, hint!) - a flash-based entry would be fantastic...:D

In all fairness,I still say you should have won that SMC and I should have placed second. It seems nigec, that as NEW users to tS 7.6 it is hard to get a fair shake around here. I should have done better in a few of these contests by now. Don't take me wrong, there are a lot of good people around here ! However, one of the biggest problems in this world today centers around conformity and hierarchy, rather than acceptance and togetherness !;):)
One day, things will change !

Ya know... I just find that statement insulting. I am not a "new" member around here and have never won the speed model challenge. I've won the monthly challenge just once. I just feel that you lump me in with everyone else and are saying that I'm a conformist and only vote for my "friends". Lumping groups of people together is a very good way to create divisions wherever you are. In the future, please moderate your posts to be less insulting. The more I read, the more I think you are just saying these things so people will vote for your entry just to shut you up.

I vote for whichever finished product I like or learn the most from. I want that made perfectly clear.

kena...you have won a contest
kena....I like you, but your attitude against me is unwarranted. You have a right to your opinion, but I did not mention names...and I have ALWAYS said nice things about your work and everyone else's here ! I should have done better in the contests here and nigec should have won that SMC.
Go back to sleep kena, you're having a nightmare !:)

Oh sh*t don't start fighting!

I never felt it was because in the greater scheme of things I'm a new comer, the thing I posted originally was after the rules changed so I didn't have a problem, it was all the arguements after that which made me wonder why I bother.. please don't start again

the SMC has helped me a great deal, I don't do it to win, I just wanna get better, I'm doing stuff I wouldn't usually do and it takes me out of my comfort zone

You know; I did a game recently, in my eyes its the best thing I've ever done, I pulled together a whole adventure game system, I've not had a single comment anywhere except the places it was beta tested, either its so cr*p its not worthy of a comment or its mind blowing good so there's no need.. thats true disapointment, not getting a vote in a SMC is a drop in the ocean for me.

Speaking from my knowledge of this community, it would not vote on an image based on who made it. Everyone here has integrity and would vote based on which image they liked best.

We've seen almost exactly the same thing with our contest of course, those here will remember that from some months ago. We did move to a group voting mechanism as a result - but this is a group voting mechanism already, and knowing the group, I am sure the votes were fair, and not done on a buddy system, an "old school tie" system, or anything else other than which image they liked best.

As for having two images in there, well, I would hope if I'd experienced a funeral and hardware problems, or other exceptional circumstances, that people might be kind enough to make some allowances. I do think that if the image had JUST been the car - the result would still be the same. It's unfortunate that the two images were in there, as it apparently adds extra weight to the argument that wouldn't be there had it won with just the car itself entered.

I have to say, don't enter a contest if you are going to have sour grapes if you don't win. It's a rule I apply to ALL contests. When you enter, you have to accept that judgement is in the hands of others, and what you consider "best" in an image may not be what others consider best.

I kept out of this last time around, because I thought the whole argument would simply die down, and this is a community contest and so in many senses nothing to do with Caligari. But I feel this is now at the point of spoiling and tainting what is an excellent community driven and community run event, so I will step in.

Out of interest, the car image was not my choice of winner. I still do not feel it is wrong that others felt differently, nor do I feel this community is the type that would need to go to logging in under different names to double vote (hard to do given how we moderate the forums btw), or that people vote based on criteria like who it was who made the image. Myself, I trust the community here and think they are a long way above such things. I think the result shows that that was the image people actually, genuinely preferred - whether you liked it best or not.

So I would ask this argument come to an end. If you enter a contest, please realise on entering that you might not win, and that if you don't win, that is not an indication of cheating, just an indication that the judges and judging process did not prefer your entry.

I too find it insulting that the community here has been accused of being unable to run a contest fairly, and being so bound up with winning that they'd vote for best friends or even log in twice to ensure they win. I think everyone here likes their own work well enough not to care if it wins, particularly when there is no actual prize at stake - I don't think anyone is insecure enough to have to have their image win a contest to feel good about themselves or their work.

HTH,

Tom

PS - old existing users win more contests than new users. They may have different skills and a different approach than new users, and so prefer different kinds of images. You'll find, for instance, that photorealism is often preferred among 3D artists, so images tending toward photoreal tend to win more. Your images don't tend toward photoreal, but to a more artistic style. It is true this is equally valid, and that artistically speaking photoreal doesn't mean an image has more merit. But it is true that in the group of people known as 3D artists, photoreal tends to be preferred, viewed as a goal or holy grail. This is the group that is judging you. The group has a bias, not because the group is cheating or unfair or preferring old users, just because that happens to be a prevailing mind set among 3D artists. The older and more established the 3D artist, the more likely they are to have this "traditional" view of 3D. See statements from people on how the real-time renderer is "just not good enough" and "doesn't do quality work" - this is the same bias at work.

And also, the older and more established the user, the more skills they have. It is not surprising that existing users win more than new users, they have had longer to perfect technique and tools too. Again not something that indicates cheating, just that indicates more practice, more time working on their work, more time perfecting what they do. Add that to the previous bias that again is not cheating, and the contest results make sense without anyone being accussed of cheating or voting for friends.

One of the primary reasons for the SMC and the MMC was to boost participation amongst users of the forum and trueSpace users.

Another reason was the opportunity to learn while one models and composes.

Yet another reason is to see how the other guy thinks, how they develop concept into form and how they go about composing their art by their individual methods.

I'm very sure if the resident 'pro's participated in the SMC and MMC (they know who they are), they would win month after month.

Art displayed is very subjective to the viewer. I've often wondered that the academic artist who use their PhD's in art history as a guideline to discuss what art is or isn't haven't lost focus.

A flashy, shiny car will attract more than a bouquet of flowers or a basket of fruit. That's just the nature of our 'lunch bucket' world.

Techno-geekiness is also attractive in this age of technology. People in general love widgets and things that pique our intellectual curiosity.

Salads are often more nutritious and healthy than a hamburger. But hey! Which one tastes better?

I personally like 'what the heck' kind of art. But that's me and I'm weird. :D

I'm fairly sure that's part of why Prodigy stopped entering the SMC - as a pro (and multiplpe winner) he graciously stepped down so more folks would have a chance to win.

Tom....I respect your point of view, but I ask that you also respect mine.
I was bashed in my very first post here, and it has continued off and on. I have watched the poles closely, so I know who is supplying more votes. Some people may get the notion that a win may look good on a resume ? In any case, my feelings stand....I was one of the first tS 7.6 newbies to poke his head in the door at a time of mixed feelings against a FREE tS and newbies.....and I should have done better in the past poles.
P.S. I have entered some photorealistic work here and there.....Now I'm going to try and leave it at that:)

Breech, if you cannot get your Models textured before this Challenge ends you must finish afterwards. You might not get the Red Baron done but I just so happen to have a "red hot pork plane" ready to do him in!:p

I have a great fondness for Snoopy so I hope you finish him.

With the time zones being what they are I will not start a poll in the middle of MY night so everybody still has about 24h to enter the #43 SMC!

@ -Georg - Do carry on, Breech Block, fantastic idea! I would love to see it finished.

Thanks Georg. I might get a couple of hours free time tonight to get some texture work done.

Thanks to TomG and nigec for their kind words.

Steinie, now that is one dogfight I'd love to see! :D
