You know the drill - keep your comments and queries to this thread and your entries to the challenge thread please!

I want to look at your entries and imagine the sound of a great samba or salsa....

Great topic Nez!

I have been a drummer for many years because I wanted to make lots of noise on a big drum kit. I always stayed away from the exotic counterparts, too difficult to play, and I have to admit - a bit shamefully - that most of the instruments you mention I just don't know, oh yes the tambourine :)

I hope there will be many nice entries!

I wondered if you might play due to the excellent snare drum you did before. I'm mainly a drummer and bass player but I did buy myself some congas off ebay a few years back (don't use them enough!) and have a few bits like cowbells and jam-blocks on my drum kit.

You're right though - ordinary drumming is definitely easier! :p

Hope you have time for an entry, but no snare drum this time :D

thy james but this is a very simple dumset. I spend more time to find a photo of a drumset than for tghe modeling :)

well.. I not only put in MY entry, but I used the new render engine to render it. It's a bit hard because people think of Drums when they think of percussion.

I did a search on Google to find the Bar Chime

Some excellent entries so far, well done....

James - I don't know what it is either, but it looks like fun! A bit like the guiro I have at home, but without the corrugated body.... they look like finger hoes, but not sure what you do with it once your holding it...! :D

Vizu - good job on the congas, they look great. The only thing that doesn't look quite right to me is the 'fat' part of the drum is a bit low on the drum. The widest part is usually closer to the top, but not at the very top.... but it's a very good model and nice render. The rims, lugs and stand all look very detailed.

Kena - nice job on the chimes, I still want to get a set of these for my drum-kit! Yours look just the job... Good on you for trying out the new render engine too - how are you finding it to use?

Georg - fantastic tambourine (and nice composite render too) - it's a lot like the drum-set tambourine I have (except mine's black!). The piece of music looks horrendous though! Real nasty time signatures!

Still plenty of time for some more entries yet so hope we see seom more as the week goes on... thanks to those who've already joined in...

Thy Nez but i do it from a Photo that i found in google.

I don´t think that i have to must create a scene with all details and exact proportions. Hey this is a speedmodelingchallange and this is to show how fast we can work and with wich technic we have do. I use the smc only to see how i other guys craete there scenes and what i can learn from them.

Hey, no worries - I was sying I liked the level of detail - looks like you've put a lot of work in that is difficult to see at the end - but the work is there.

The shape thing is a funny one - just looks a little strange to me compared to my own congas, but I'm sure they come in a range of shapes and sizes.

Good work.

Thanks. This is actually a set that is supposed to either attach to the drums or have it's own stand, so I'm sure they would work for you. I found the pic on a google search

Yaf(a)ray is ok... Just not used to the settings yet, so a bit of a curve going.

Took me a long time to understand that one box is color, the other is reflection with the brighter the color in IT, the more reflection.

Vizu's set is nice, realistic render.

Nez, I like your , er cabassa, I have one, not so fancy as this one, and I never knew its name.:o

The texture of the handle is very nice, really like painted wood, with the somewhat irregular reflection, well done.

Vizu..very nice render...whish I could light up a scene like that. Georg I love the blend of wire to render...how did you do that?

Hi Rjeff,

the blend was done in Photoshop. The render was one layer and I used a screen dump as a second layer on top. Making a transparancy gradient on the top layer you can then make the two pictures blend. I guess you could do it in any program that uses layers.

rjeff you can light up your scene.

VRay !

one cylinder, delete the top and bottom faces.

turn all faces inner, paint the cylinder with a plain material and a environment textur (a panorama foto would be nice). Paint 3 faces of the cylinder a luminace of more than "3" value. the other 9 with "0"

Check that vray will not only render vray lights.

add one bulb light into your scene but set the light not so bright.

The chrome will show in render your cylindermap what bring the realistic look. The 3 faces with the higher luminance simulate a window where the sun comes in. the bulb brings the higher spec effect.

i´m sure the same way will works fine in lightworks, yafaray and dribble.

note that you can disable the recive and cast shadows for the cylinder object by rightclick on the object select button (modeler side)

Vizu, that sounds like an interesting trick to try out, thanks for sharing it.

rjeff, you may be able to achive a similar effect with HDRI lighting using an image with a highly directional light source (e.g. an internal image with a bright window) in place of the cylinder...?

Nez I have tried so many different things to get nice lighting and I just can't nail it. I use .hdr files and no matter what I tend to get the 1000 point of light affect. In other words..to many shadows.

Hmm - sounds like something's up there; when my current render is done, I'll try to create basic text scene with HDRI and then share all my settings to see if youcan reproduce or whether you still get same problem... stay tuned...

As for this challenge - well, I'm disappointed in the feeble turnout I guess; there doesn't seem to be much point extending it as there's been plenty of time already, so I'll get the poll up shortly.

Sorry, Nez. I gathered some images to do a Djembe but was busy with other stuff. :(

It was a good topic though and I like the idea of having narrower topics since that is more like a real world situation where a client requests a specific project.

Jack - I know you're incredibly busy so I'm not surprised you didn't have time; hope you still get a chance to try the djembe at some point but I won't be surprised if it isn't any time soon.

All the best for the Yafaray project, file format converters, organics course videos....

Right - just as a simple experiment, please try the following and see how you get on...

I made a very basic scene, as follows:

Modelside...

cube - 20x20x0.1, centred at 0,0,0.

another cube, 3x3x10, centred roughly at 0,0,5.

one sphere, 2x2x2, centred roughly at 0,5,1

render settings - render quality=high, raycast, raytrace on.

remove all lights.

add hdri light, with settings as shown in first image, i.e.

empty kitchen hdri file (standard with tS)

other numbers as panel. shadow type set to mapped shadows.

result as per first image when rendering. several shadows result - this is normal for most hdri but depends on the hdri image, i.e how many distinct (or indistinct) light sources it contains.

Upped the samples to 100 for second image and 200 for third - you can still see several distinct shadows although they get softer. You could probably play with shadow map settings to improve, but sometimes it's better to try a different hdri - some give more diffuse lighting than others, just depends on the image. I usually get reasonable results with less than 100 samples.

For contrast - last image shows settings back at 100 samples, but with raytraced shadows instead of mapped - if this is what you're getting (lots and lots of distinct shadows) you probably need to swap to mapped shadows...

hope that's some help?

LOL Steinie! I still haven't repositioned that wind cup on it either. ;) Another abandoned thread that needs to be revisited one of these years.

I was thinking about reviving it to test how the Yafaray project handled objects with lots of nested groups, but Rayman's Lamborghini was pretty insane so I'm sure that part of the code is holding up well.
