Well, some of you may not know this but this week marks two years since ‘SMC 1’, so I thought it might be interesting to look back over some of the stats for the two years so far.

Obviously we have the ‘winners gallery' thread, though I don’t know how many folks have actually been back through it or the older SMC threads if they’re relative newcomers (there area few of us who have been here at least that long!)

So some fun facts for you for SMCs 1-35 (I’ve not included 36 as the voting hasn’t yet been completed):

Over the 35 SMCs, we’ve had 56 different participants (or at least 56 names, can’t tell from this end whether anyone’s been operating under more than one name!) who between them have submitted an impressive 364 entries

Of those, an impressive 18 participants have won the challenge at least once – that’s almost a third.

And a total of 30 have achieved at least a ‘podium’ finish, which is (obviously) more than half of all entrants.

Ten participants have entered only a single challenge (and the best any of them has managed is a 3rd place – make of that what you will!)

By comparison, most of the more prolific entrants have won at least once….

The five people who have entered the most SMCs are: Prodigy (surprise!), Nez (woo!), JamesMC – all of whom have entered more than 20 challenges) plus Kena and Jack Edwards, closely followed by Georg and Hemulin.

In terms of the actual number of entries, JamesMC leads by a country mile with a staggering 46! See below for a bit more information as to how come! The only others with more than 20 entries are again Prodigy, Nez and Kena.

However, there definitely is a case of quality rather than quantity for some: special recognition goes to Daybe (2 wins out of 3 entries), Transient (a podium finish in all 4 entries) plus Blakeo, Changa, Ed Baker, Georg, Spacekdet, SteveBe, Vizu and WickedWitchoftheWeb who all have very high ratios of ‘medals’ compared to entries (and should therefore be feared as competitors!). :D

I guess it’s maybe an appropriate point to interject a special mention to the undisputable king of the SMC (so far!) – Prodigy…

With 27 entries in 26 SMCs, he’s entered the most challenges and most entries (bar JamesMC) and won 6 times – plus 8 second places and 9 ‘bronzes’, which means 23 podium places. In other words, of the 26 challenges he’s entered, he’s only missed the podium three times…

You will be relieved to hear that he must be human though – he failed to get a single vote in SMC27 and only scored a single vote in the other two occasions… so there is a little hope for the rest of us still! ;)

So a few words on ‘participation’ (this is feeling like a wedding speech…) –

it’s been encouraging to see an apparent rise in the number of people taking part of late, but for those without longer memories, you may be surprised to know that the challenge that attracted the most entries was way back in February 2007, with SMC 8 ‘Brush’, with a staggering 25 entries. Admittedly, 7 of these were by the super-prolific JamesMC. But there were 17 entrants in total, which is still a record so far.

The least successful challenges, in terms of number of entrants were #12, #18, #26 and #29, where only four people took part.

But it is good to be back above 10 participants fairly regularly, as was the case generally back in the ‘early days’ up to around #15, after which it dropped quite a bit until #32.

Average number of entrants is 9.1 and the average number of entries they produce is 10.7.

In terms of voting, the number of votes cast seems quite erratic, typically ranging between about 20 and 35 votes, with an average of 25.6. Worst case was a mere 16 votes in #21, best turnout was recently in #35 with a massive 45 votes. (NB – these figures exclude additional votes cast in tie-break votes, of which there have been two).

Anyway, I hope some of you find that vaguely interesting and that it might provoke some of you to look back over the older threads, especially if you are newer to the challenges. I only really started to look more closely as I was struggling to recall how I had done on some of the older challenges and had lost track of how many ‘silvers’ I’d managed to get, which is a bit self centred, and then decided to look in a bit more detail at general trends of participation etc. Hopefully my numbers are all correct but I apologise if a typo means I’ve got something wrong – no offence intended. If there’s anything particular you want to know, please ask and I’ll do my best to find out…

Feel free to reminisce! :D

Hi Nez, what a great set of stats you produced. I find SMCs very useful to train modeling skills because it forces you to model outside your own box. Also seeing the wireframes of other modelers is very instructive. I try to participate as much as I can and it is good to see it form an important part of this forum.

What I miss lately (i am guilty as well) is some more feedback on the modeling in the Comments thread.

Interesting stuff! I'm curious as to whether the ones that received fewer entries represent less interesting objects, or more difficult subjects, or some other factor (holidays, just random, etc). I'm also interested in the voting, I wonder if that too reflects more interesting subjects?

It could all mean nothing of course, but I always like to explore. Would be interesting to hear the comments of those who didnt take part in the most poorly attended ones, to see why those had so few entries, etc!

Thanks for sharing this!

Some good points Tom.

In case it helps, the four I listed as particularly low number of participants were as follows:

#12 Computer Case (around May 07) - followed a very successful SMC with 15 entrants, so possibly a case of people taking a break. Personally didn't enter as felt it was a bit 'niche' subject and wasn't likely to produce something very interesting!

#18 Lunch (August 07) - was over the summer holidays but to my mind a very difficult subject in the time frame

#26 Your house (March 08) - possibly perceived as too difficult? Not sure - this is the only one of the 4 I did enter.

#29 Climbing frame (May 08) - not sure - personally didn't have time due to other committments, can't speak for anyone else.

With regards voting - I could give you all the figures if you're interested, but I didn't see any particularly significant trends - the votings is actually moderately consistent regardless of number of entires and wasn't particularly low on the challenges with the fewest entries, a bit below the average perhaps but not substantially (generally speaking).... but I'm not a statistician and haven't carried out major analysis!

I have a feeling the subjects may have a part to play, looking at that. May be other factors too of course. It is interesting that 3D modelers tend to pick / like certain kinds of things to make, and perhaps this ties in to that.

Anyway, happy birthday / anniversary SMC, and here's to many more succesful years!

Great job Nez. It must have taken you quite a while to research and post all those stats but it was definitely worth the effort as it makes for a fascinating read. I also agree with Georg and think his comments are spot on. In addition, entering the SMC is not only a lot of fun, it has really boosted both my abilities and confidence when it comes to modelling in tS.

As an afterthought, perhaps as a way of celebrating, there could be a poll for the best winner at the end of each year.
