"Let your imagination run wild" JamesMC Copyright
DEADLINE : 20th October 2008
The rules (as stolen from everyone else):
1. Create the model(s) within the 2 hours time limit.
2. You may enter as many times as you like.
3. Your entry should include a wireframe screen grab before subdivision has been applied, mainly this is so people can get an idea of how things were created and maybe learn something.
4. Include time spent, trueSpace version, render engine.
5. Post only one image per entry which must be no larger than 800x600 pixels. Final composition is up to you.
6. Render time, lighting and texturing are not included as people with slower computers may be at a disadvantage.
7. The winner is encouraged to place a tutorial in the new Tutorium showing how they made their entry (Contact Norm). Sometimes the wireframe isn't enough. |

Me first me first! *glee*
Now, I started the night before the contest was given, but I checked the time I made it to the time it was modified and I still had 45 minutes, so what the hell
This is my amp, a white* Micro cube, with my settings and no strap because they break off...

I rendered in the wrong image size but I'll change that around soon.
So, specs.
Made in TS 6.6
Modelling time: 2:30 due to the fact that I actually had to MODEL the textures...TS wasn't playing ball that day.
Render time Something chronic, the real amp was in use for while...

Not really much in the way of modeling, but some lighting and compositing experiments in Photoshop.

OK, finally got my textures and renders done today after doing the modelling at the weekend.
My first scene fully modelled and rendering in 7.6, albeit in the modelside of course....
This isn't my audio system by the way, just a deliberately mismatched set-up you might imagine a guitarist putting together...:D
Modelling: 2 hours, no SDS except on a couple of cables you can barely see, otherwise mostly straightforward polys, sweeps, bevels, fillets (and booleans of course)... first major outing with fillets has mostly been very encouraging though there were afew cases where they wouldn't behave...
Textures - took about 90mins in PSP to work up custom textures for the buttons/fascias/LCD displays, then made them so small in the main render they were barely visible, which is why I felt I had to provide a close up...
Renders - about an hour to 90 mins for the 2 renders required, thanks to HDRI; rendered out oversized with no AA and resized in PSP. |

Dr Who CD Player
Models – 2 Hours
Textures – 2 Hours
Lighting – 1 Hour
Software – trueSpace 7.6 (Model side)
Renderer – Lightworks
The inspiration for this model came to me whilst I was out looking for Christmas present ideas. Dr Who merchandise seems to be lining just about every shelf this year with some really cool remote control daleks. I was also looking for some Hi-Fi brochures to see if there was anything there that might be suitable for the SMC (I don't actually own a Hi-Fi myself) and then it hit me, why not combine the two. Hope you like it. |

A Tube Amplifer - for the true audiophiles.;)
I'll do a proper beauty render later, I just didn't want to miss the deadline like last month. |

This has to be the most fun SMC yet. Anyways the amp with tubes Prodigy showed as an example just plan inspired me. Maybe because I had a number of tube amps as a kid growing up.
The modeling turned out not to be the hard part, luckily the tube which was the hardest modeling part was easy to resize and configure to the smaller size versions. Everything else modeling wise was a breeze in WS.
Used following DX shaders:
SolidMetal (Caligari)
Glass (noko)
Shinny Metal (noko,trueBlue)
MappedBlinn (JEdwards)
The floor used MappedBlinn with render to texture to get a reflection.
Render - Real Time, Workspace
Modeling - about 2hrs
DX material application/trials - 2 hrs
Lighting - 3 hours
Post Process in PSPX2 - 30 min |

Thanks for the long deadline prodigy... :) I managed to get something done...
I have continued since to get the speakers and other details done which will hopefully make it to a better final image at a later date... but this is how far I'd got after 2hours.
Anyway here's the detail:
Time: 2 hours
tS: 7.6
Modeler: Workspace
Render: Vray
Everything Else: Texturing/Lighting - days! The lack of decent photo references meant remaking the decals, text etc in photoshop...
