Can one substiture an animation for the image? With separate wire frame image. What better way to show off a model maybe. Anyways might be interesting.

On second thought, it would be hidden until one plays the animation which would make viewing much more complicated. Image, wireframe and optional animation? Probably take away from real aspect of contest which is modeling but then again a simple fly around of model . . .

If you want to go to a lot of trouble to model the object as seen from several viewpoints (I know some of us have 'cheated' before by leaving out details you won't see) you can just make sure your 'single' submission image is a montage of several views - not as effective as a flyaround perhaps, but people have certainly posted final submissions that show several viewpoints on th esame object montaged together, or several duplicates of the object in different positions in a single scene.... or you could always post a fly-around animation as well as your static render...

That idea does work...trust me...it got me four votes last time! To be honest I don't think doing and animation will give you any more bonus aside from kudos points but then...I'm frequently wrong.

Well I'd say you got the votes for a great model, but the presentation may have helped....

Really like your little amp - would be interested to see your lighting and textures in a bit more detail as I'm trying to use 7.6 model side (i.e. basically 6.6). Is it possible for you to do an 'archive' of the scene and post it so I can look more at some of your settings? Or just screen caps of your main materials and lighting settings.... I'd vaguely considered doing a big Marshall stack but may have to reconsider now....

Cheers

Sure sure. My lighting was the higher quality default IBL setup in the 'lights' menu (in ts 6.6) which is basically an IBL light with environment disabled and shadows enabled. Nothing very fancy.

As for screenies...I cheated when it came to texturing

I used three main textures for this, and it's all edited from the creme colour of my amp.

The grill and the wood textures were simbiont though. As something to point out.

The top of the knobs are the same grill texture I just got rid of the holes in it.

hmmm, you got me thinking, maybe a mirror or two :). Mine will probably be DX or real time rendered so maybe more of a challenge using mirrors. Doesn't seem to much opposition to include an animation with the standard two images. Have to model first before I get into a quick flyby (if I do one). Thanks for the input Nez.

I think W!zard had made some progress with reflections in real-time, though they may have been faked (which may also be an option for you - your 'mirror' could be a plane showing a captured render/view....) so you could try finding out from him what he's been trying...

Weevil - thanks for the screen grabs, will have to look at them more closely. I've been trying to play with the HDRI but haven't really got to grips with the nuances of handling the materials yet so may return to IBLs for the moment as I'm slightlty more practiced with them, even if they are slow....

started mine this weekend, fooled around with a speaker design and scrapped the first scene idea which didn't look so good... second idea has more potential, want to get it done in the next few evenings...

Unusually, I actually had some free time over the weekend, so I managed to squeeze in 2 hours of modelling for the SMC and a short spell to start on the MMC; I still have to texture my SMC entry and hope to get that done in my lunch breaks this week, so should have something to post later in the week, depending on how long that takes...

Damn Nez! Your entry's giving us all a run for our money! I notice you tried my trick of modelling the textures into the stack!

Well here is my entry... had some problems with the metal/blass shaders and textures displaying correctly but I think that is the limitation of the poor gfx chip I have at the moment since all the settings is set to max in the render options :(

Last image is just a close up to show the record player more clearly...

Had another idea for a second entry but only just found some time to do this and need to do MMC too so I'm not sure if I will have time...

I'm out of this one.. i kinda run a mile from audio stuff.. i spent a lot of years fitting in-car entertainment and i feckin hated doing it with a passion! its got to be the most tedious, unsatifying job in the world.. so i really .. really don't wanna start modeling something lol

don't like audio system idea either nigec, but decided to try an unual approach, hence the spaceship-turn-table-speak-cockpit-thingey ;)

have another quirky idea for an unusal sound system but don't know if I'll have time for it...

Cheers Weevil; actually, most of the textures are actually textures, it's only really the 'manufacturers' badges that are physically modelleled - apart from all the dials/buttons/displays etc - they are modelled but with textures then applied to either the buttons or fascias with a planar UV. The texture on the speaker cabs is very similar to that on your little amp though.... I'm probably best pleased with the fabric mesh on the speaker cabs and the LCD displays... the latter were just created in Paintshop Pro and mapped on to the display objects.

anybody know why I'm getting this kind of render quality? is it just because of a poor graphics card.chip? I've got all the settings on highest that i know of but use d3d since opengl crashes all the time [sending a crash dump to support soon]

What are you rendering with for these images? D3D and OpenGL only affect the real-time view in the Model side, so unless you are screen grabbing, those will have no effect on your render quality. The real-time workspace is not affected by that, as it is always DirectX and can't be changed to anything else (only the Model side real-time changes), and offline renderers eg Lightworks are unaffected by your video card in any way.

Also not sure what aspect of the render you are asking about that you expected to be better?

Thanks!

Tom

Hey Tom. That's what I thought too but I wondered if I might have been under the wrong impression. I only work on the model side of 7.6 and I use light works. During these renders, I tried to use the plastic and translucent plastic shaders as well as the glass shader for the turntable lid. But the surfaces seemed... grainy and not smooth, with no transparency in the glass. Although the mirror effect for the center of the speakers worked fine.

Like I said, I had the general render settings on the highest I could find with raytrace lighting and I used some default light setups, (starry night with an extra local light) so I can't figure if I did something wrong or missed a setting somewhere... I can make a screen grab with any property panels open that you want to have a look at and post it here if you want...
