SMC #35 – Iconic Movie Prop

Introduction

Years after a movie has been screened at the cinema, some of the props used in the film remain in the public's consciousness. These props can even be turned into highly profitable revenue streams as they are merchandised in the shape of toys, posters and collectables. Some go even further and gain an iconic status, instantly recognised right across the globe. You may say this is down to clever marketing, but I prefer to think it's due to the highly talented designers and artists behind the props original creation. So, as a tribute to them, the unsung heroes who have given the world some of its most recognizable design icons, this weeks trueSpace SMC is entitled Iconic Movie Prop.

As a get out clause, for those of you not satisfied with the vast array of spaceships, robots, monsters, weapons, costumes, gadgets and machines to choose from, if you want to create something completely original, then you can submit a prop that no one ever saw because it was cut from the final movie. That said, your design should still endeavour to encompass the films original aesthetics.

Good luck to one and all.

Brief - Recreate an iconic movie prop (see image examples below).

Time Limit – 3 Hours.

Deadline – Midnight Sunday 21st September 2008 (see note 1).

Rules:

1. Create the model(s) within the specified time limit.

2. Texture creation, lighting, rendering and any post work are exempt from the time limit.

3. There are no restrictions on the amount of differing entries you can submit.

4. Entries are restricted to one image no larger than 800x600 pixels plus one additional wireframe image (before subdivision) also no larger than 800x600 pixels. (see note 2).

5. Each entry should have a title and specify the modelling time, render time, render engine and version of trueSpace used.

6. The winner is encouraged to place a tutorial of how they made their winning design in the new trueSpace Tutorium (Contact Norm for details).

Notes

1.Midnight is deemed as 23:59:59 hours local time in relation to the entrant.

2.Artists who submit images greater than the quantity\size specified will be asked to edit their post accordingly.

Title - Enter The Dragon

Model Time - 35 Minutes

Render Time - 1 Minute

Software - trueSpace 6.6

Thought I'd best set an example and get the SMC ball rolling. When it comes to iconic movie props, who can forget Hans replacement hand from the film Enter the Dragon. This image was designed for 2 reasons. Firstly: to pay tribute to my greatest hero of all time, the legendary Bruce Lee. And secondly to demonstrate just how easy it is to enter the SMC. The whole project start to finish took less than hour with the model taking just over half an hour and the rest of the time just fiddling with the lighting and trying to get the reflections right. Very simple, but just shows you what can be done in a very short time.

Here's my first attempt:

The puzzle box from HellRaiser

The box took.. well 10 minutes i already had textures for it.. the rest of the scene took the 2hrs 50 mins lol

I thought i better go kiddie friendly and just add the films trade features; as in the hooks and a simple pinhead ;)

I planned bright lights through the wall but i wasn't clever enough..DOH!!

TS6.6

whatever the default render is

3 hours

1min to render

Edit i rescaled the box as it was way to small

The Maltese Falcon. My falcon looks more like a Maltese pinguin but at least it forced me into organic modeling. I combined the render with an old movie poster. Needed the full three hours and can probably use another 3 for further tweaking.

Ok.

Due to time problem - both the 2hour limit and my day is running out, I am posting this not completely pure Dalek.

Truespace 7.6, model side.

Rendered in Lightworks.

Modeltime - 2 hr (the small spheres that each Dalek has takes an extreme time to add - I had to cheat and make them larger and fewer to have chance!)

Texturing and lightning - 30 min?

Not sure about the lightning - should you use volumetric or not? I want the feeling that you just have shined a flashlight on the Dalek....

I am hoping to have more time to go and revisit this later and come up with a more pure Dalek... ;)

I don't have an exact time because I get to modeling and then before I know it I'm playing in textures. (also had to restart this a lot, just couldn't make it comeout right).

Hum it together now.... doo-da-doo-da.... da-doo-da-doo-doo-doo......

Hat and whip modeled/textured/rendered in TS 3.2

(I did do some sharpening in PSP)

3 hourse (I think actually a little less)

A lot of time lighting and texturing (I know it looks like it should be simple but cloth is not a 3.2 thing :D)

More great entries I see.

However, not wanting to put a downer on the communities competitive spirit, as the current competition's moderator, it is my duty to point out that quite a few of the submissions surpass the image restrictions specified in the SMC's entry criteria. Competitors should note, that since its inception, the SMC has always specified that entries are limited to one image no greater than 800 x 600 pixels and one additional wireframe image of similar size. Multiple images of the same entry and pictures shown at a higher resolution give the entrant a distinct and unfair advantage. The entry specifications are there to ensure a level playing field for all competitors and also to assist would be voters by presenting them a uniformed selection.

Therefore, I now ask that all those artists who have submitted images above and beyond the competition's entry criteria edit their post and correct their entries accordingly.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Dirty Harry and his big 44

The rest is just BS really.. but what can i say I couldn't pose the gun to hide the bad bits.. plus it was fun to do this way

There's quite a big mistake in the scene.. i wonder if anyone notices

the gun took about 2 hours..

the badge was part of the original plan.. but after i textured it i found images for Callahan's but i ran out of time to do it again.. plus TS had crashed a few times so i was getting fed up

the car shape i can't take credit for.. i made it look period

the guy is a poser model (sorry) but this is a speed thing lol

render time 4 minutes

default renderer

PS i edited the hellraiser wireframe image.. it was 800x640 sorry

Well, I never intended to copy Weevil, did Obi-wan's sabre at the weekend, spent an hour modelling it, so decided to use some of my remaining time to make some more... second is based fairly closely on a 'generic' sabre from the film (think it's Ki Adi Mundi's but can't remember for sure). Third was just made-up using generic bits, just for fun...

However, this is a significant milestone for me - whilst I did all the modelling in tS5.1 (because I did it at home), this is my first forum render using 7.6! Woohoo! :D

Still just using Modelside of course (actually, I cannot use Workspace yet due to some graphics card woes with my work PC's Quadro card or something), but this still lets me use the newer version of Lightworks with HDRI for the first time. Fun!

So stats:

modelling: 2 and half hours, in tS5.1 - mostly just primitives, polys, booleans etc as normal, nothing very clever.

textures/lighting: approx 1 hour in 7.6 modelside - mix of Shaderlab textures (thanks TomG!) and basic, plus one of the supplied HDRI maps.

rendering: took about an hour I think, probably coz I stuck the samples high and 4xAA - should probably just have done that aftrewards in PSP. No post-work.

And Weevil's back...If it boiled down to a lightsaber fighter Nez'll win because he's got three of 'em.

So...The viper from Battlestar Galactica...Was there a film...I dunno, but some were feature length and there was more or less...a few series's...

So...the rules that said you can't post two images, I've got around that...I just hope you weren't meant to put them into context

Modelling time...Right up to minute...I didn't really count, but I MAY have run over...but then the absurdly small texture time made up for it. I stole my Hornet texture...That reminds me...

The landing spars are recycled, but they were an afterthought once I decided what image I was going to do, the detail down the side of the engines is recycled (especially if I wanted to keep to the time limit) as well.

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i192/Weasle_01/viper.jpg
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i192/Weasle_01/viperwire.jpg

I went from doing the Tomcat from top gun, to the Hunter killer from terminator to the dropship from aliiens until I ended up with this...yet another site devoted to these things...

So, if I'm still elligable after all that. Have at ye' Nez...

Model time: Let's say 3 hours, give or take a few minutes
Tetxure time: Half an hour
Rendering time: Oh...stupid

Cool! Just in time. This was too neat to pass up. Nothing complicated, for the Star Trek fans out there, original series. Small Phaser.

Modeling 90 min (WS)

Texturing and experimenting 2hr
