SURPRISE!!! ;D

Create a Combat Ground Vehicle of any kind under 4 hours.. historic,modern,futuristic... realistic/fantasy... your choice

Idea links :

http://images.google.co.za/images?um=1&hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=combat+vehicle&spell=1
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_vehicle

Ps. The google images one has both modern and futuristic pictures, some very nice 3d ones to ;)

DEADLINE : PST Midnight 1st September 2008 (Caligari Office time)

The rules (as stolen from everyone else ;) :
1. Create the model(s) within the 4 hours time limit.
2. You may enter as many times as you like.
3. Your entry should include a wireframe screen grab before subdivision has been applied, mainly this is so people can get an idea of how things were created and maybe learn something.
4. Include time spent, trueSpace version, render engine.
5. Post only one image per entry which must be no larger than 800x600 pixels. Final composition is up to you.
6. Render time, lighting and texturing are not included as people with slower computers may be at a disadvantage.
7. The winner is encouraged to place a tutorial in the new Tutorium showing how they made their entry (Contact Norm). Sometimes the wireframe isn't enough.
8. Main model must be done in trueSpace only, other supporting objects in the scene can be premade but preferably by yourself.

I've always been a big fan of the Mad Max film's so this pic was a bit of a thro back from that.. the 2CV was the first thing i ever made a model of, way back with version 3.2.. so i knew how to do one quickly

Its got a jet engine mainly because i spent 2 much time on the car shell! I wanted a nasty BIG V8

I wasn't clock watching and i did it 2 sittings, i uses TS's textures to save time

TrueSpace 6.6

Scanline rendered

approx time 4 hrs

render time 1min

Claw hammer claw

The rear wheel has an eccentric axis which makes the machine wobble when it rolls. Together with the suspension in the front the hammers start to swing on their springs. In addition the turret slowly turns and this way everything around this vehicle is neatly pulverized.

I used the full 4 hours but spent a lot of time on unnecessary tweaking and arranging, in fact the hand and hammer were done in 30 minutes. I kept close to the box form so that with SDS the roundish Disney like form would appear.

Personally I think we should go back to the 2 hours to keep it a speed mc.

Is it just me or has the army got one up on you? *Most probably slapped for killing the joke*

And here's my second attempt...the attack slug. He imobablises enemies with those two subwoofers...belting screeching noises

The sound of cher...oh yeah...and his eye shoots a purple death ray

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i192/Weasle_01/attackslug.jpg

How does the pilot survive? Weeelll...you see that cotton wool?

Time...about 3 hours for the pilot...that's pre made...about ten minutes for the slug...that's premade too...which originally was a snail...which was canoe...so umm...an hour...no paint to save time and weight so I'm about even here...

So maybe I'm not onto a winner here. But you can't blame a guy for attempting to ge kudos points now can you?

Alrighty, here is my first entry, also want to do a second modern/futuristic one...

This is a "wall scaler" called the Armored Turtle...

Basically, those huge harpoon hooks is shot over the wall, then the turtle reverses to pull the rope tight because only the first five meters are 'armored' so the enemy can't cut the ropes. Then the crew starts reeling in the rope, pulling the turtle to the wall and then up the side [didn't have time to do the gears and pulleys inside that will accomplish this but I have it all worked out ;D ]. Once they reach the top, the crossbows are used to clear any soldiers directly next to the exit which is now the bellow of the turtle standing on its read [ will do reference pics to illustrate and post it in the comments thread ]

OK, got mine done - not really quite happy with the lighting as it's ended up a bit to obright in some places and too dark in others, but it took so long to render I can't be bothered to adjust it again! Washed out the finer texturing on the vehicle too but had enough now...

Started off intending to model the Republic 'Juggernaut' from Revenge of the Sith - the wheels are closely inspired by these but took so long and so many polys I decided to take a different track after that... guess overall it wouldn't look out of place outside my Fortress...

Modelling - used pretty much the full 4 hours given, bar a few minutes, spread over three sittings

Texturing/lighting - about an hour. Originally started with more elaborate textures but got an out-of-memory error and had to simplify...

Render - took approx 90mins...

All in TS5.1/Lightworks.

Post process - separate pass for the lights/headlights to add glow plus a Zrender pass for depth-of-field, comped together in Paintshop Pro.

Wireframe view is with a few wheels missing - as they were very heavy poly objects it was easier to keep them out of the scene most of the time... TS5 doesn't have layers, so I just save them to an object library and reload as required...

My second entry... "Sand Puppy"

I rather like this one, reminds me of a puppy dog, hence the name ;)

...light combat vehicle of the future, with hydraulic shocks for spokes and broad metal plates for treads instead of tires [saw this type design on a WW1 tractor design but with springs instead of shocks]

... in desert storms, it unfurls its treads as seen in the image so it can dig into the sand and lower its body to the ground for a low center of gravity while folding up its 'ear' dishes...

...the huge doggy ears or 'son-wind catcher' dishes on the back generates both wind power and catched solar enegery as well as passive acoustic receptors or active radar...

...got an auto cannon 'tail' and an auto cannon 'nose' above a sensor 'tongue' that works pretty much like a dogs tongue, a passive chemical analyser to detect odors across long distance...

...sensor 'eye' baskets with visual telescopic and infra red...

... missile stack 'hair fringe' above the nose and two mine dispensers on the flanks...

Here is my entry. I used the full four hours. Of course I had to rebuild the whole thing after TS7.6 crashed hard. It would start and try to load the file, then not respond. So I had to do a full install. Anyway, here it is.

Modeling: 4 hours
Rendering: 5 minutes
TS7.6

Spiderbot

Software - trueSpace 6.6

Time - 4 Hours

Textures & Lighting - 2 Hours

This entry is inspired by some popular computer games and the United States Army's 2 billion dollar principle modernization program - Future Combat Systems(FCS). Part of the FCS project is to develop unmanned Armed Robotic Vehicles (ARV) which will assist frontline troops. Being a keen follower of these projects and seeing the systems that are currently under development, my model represents where I think the program will be a few years down the line.

The final scene was going to be a Spiderbot defending a "brewed up" Abrams tank with a medical version of the spiderbot tending one of the stricken crew. However, my PC is starting to flag up RAID Errors and I think I'm heading for a major catastrophe. Hence, the final textures and image are a bit rushed. I will probably continue with this as a WIP.

Finally, with regards the time element of this competition, I quite like the 4 hour schedule as it allows me to experiment a bit more. In the 2 hour contests, I tend to stick to methods I know.

As always, the image has lost a tremendous amount of detail having been scaled down to the SMC's entry requirements, so I have posted a link should you want to see it at a greater resolution.

Took full 4 hrs to model

Took about 30 mins to render.

Would have got it here quicker but got bogged down in sand.

Havent got the hang of doing wheels and tyres yet but will do eventually

How do you get pics to appear larger than these??

Ok here is mine..rushed it abit to get it in..

model all 4 hrs

render 15 min

This is a concept vehicle. It is a self contained unit with no window. the drivers uses a camera system to drive. It can also be a unmanned. It's main weapon is a rail gun. It has dual vulcan guns on top...and it has front mounted metal storm weapons systems as well. I tried to make it believeable as possible.
