Are there any guidelines posted on how to vote and what to look for or is it just your overall impression/gut feel?
Especially for the new people that has joined recently...
Just asking because some people might choose the picture that 'looks' the nicest, while it should actually be the 'model' that looks the nicest or well constructed or interesting geometry, whatever... and the MMC will be more the overall scene but also with focus on the main model?
Otherwise, all the scenes should only have a model and nothing else, which then might not convey the actually idea of the model construction and purpose so well in some cases, for example my desert boat which floats over the sand instead of water...?
anyways, nice to see so many entries :) hope there is a lot of non-entrant votes as well this week ;) |

I think efficiency and cleanliness of the geometry, amount of detail, creativity of the design, and how it looks in the final image are all good criteria to weigh.
I really wanted to get in on this one, ah well, guess I'll have to catch the next one. ;) |

I'd generally agree with Jack on that - I tend to look at detail/complexity and creativity of the design/interpretation as the key issues; I'm not a good judge on efficiency of the model as I've a long way to to go in that regard but I would consider how good the final submitted image looks too, albeit not as the primary factor.
Whilst it is primarily a modelling challenge, the overall composition/render is important in showing off to its best and I think most people will consider that to some degree.
But that's part of the fun of the vote - different people will prioritise on different elements anyway... art is subjective, and so is someone's SMC favourite...;) |

true, I also think a combination of things contribute to the model, not just the model itself... you might have a great model but if the angle or view is wrong, it might not look so good...
Regarding the wireframe view, might it not make sense to have a top, side, front and perspective view to get a better perspective of the model itself?
amount of detail does not really play a major factor, i mean, you could design a spectacular model with basic shapes by just having a good composition/construction layout, while you could hundreds of nurb and sds objects and it wouldn't look good at all... this I've learned in my MAV military models... |

No one says you can't composite more than one view for your wireframe image. ;)
Originally the wireframe was supposed to be composited into the entry image, but over time the group found it easier to submit a separate wire image, of course that move has lead the challenge to focus more on the quality of the final image than when the wires were composited into in the render image. |

err... from the comments, it sounds like the winner chooses the next topic? is this so? and does the winner then 'host' the next competition?
being my first time taking part, not sure how it works... |

It would be interesting to see some of these castles turn up in real world locations in Virtual Earth ;) Shouldn't be too hard given that the models and texturing etc are all already done.
May need to see a video on tidying up holes for those with booleaned doors and windows, will be working on that and it should be out this week so keep eyes peeled.
Thanks!
Tom
PS and for those that do get their models into VE, don't forget to use those as entries to the gallery this month and increase your chances of winning a prize! |

hehehehe...
hey wait! thats actually a nice idea... "castle boats" or "castle ships"! ;)
while we are talking about VE, is there a section in the manual that explains how to upload a model to VE? |

Oops - brand of coffee is ok, posting in threads without drinking the first cup of the day is problematic :)
Sorry about that - true though, would be nice to set the boats adrift on the high seas, or in harbors, etc. I think the speed modeling and monthly modeling contest could be good VE entries many times (I guess depending on subject), and entry is "free" was the thing I had thought of - you already have it modeled and textured and it shouldn't be too hard to export it to VE with just a little tweak here and there, and you then get to reuse your content (and maybe win something!).
For those with a castle and boat, why not feature both in a VE collection, could be fun!
Thanks!
Tom
PS - yes, appendix D covers exporting to VE, as do the most recent bitesize videos (more to come of those): http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?t=6193 |

Yes. You now pick a subject - set up the threads - and post your winning entry in the consolidated winning entry thread. |

theuns - if you look in the main SMC section, you'll see a thread posted to set the topic, which is th eone people reply to with their submissions, another for general comments on the theme and on the entries, plus another for the actual poll.
You have to set up the first two as soon as you've thought up the topic (yes, winner chooses the subject) and obviously the poll comes after the elapsed time for entries. You'll get an idea of the usual rules by looking at any previous SMC and the normal time allowances - it's usually around a week to ten days for entries and another week for voting or thereabouts. There's nothing to stop you coming up with your own 'one-off' rules as it's your challenge, although anything too strange might put people off!
Good luck....
NB - with the virtual earth thing, I'd note W!zard has also posted about this recenetly - if you look on the Roundtable section for the thread called 'free trip to New Zealand' (or something like that) you 'll see a bit more on this topic. |

lol TomG, great contest and congrates to theuns!
Castle boats :D. I wonder if a submarine would apply ;).
I was thinking maybe we need a VE contest but then that would be three contests about every month. Now I am eagerly awaiting next SMC. . . |

Well we have a VE category in the Caligari Gallery (making three categories, Image, Animation, and VE) so that gives a prize winning category for VE entries every month.
I am sure the other contests here on the boards like SMC and MMC would accept VE output as a final entry? Up to the users of course since they are user run, but submitting your entry as a VE item wouldn't seem to infringe any rules? (You are in effect just using it as a different render engine)?
HTH!

Thanks for all the congrats guys :D
Will check out the SMC sticky and start the new SMC asap...
Nice idea to use SMC and MMC entries for the VE contest, gonna try and do that this month ;) Are there any deadlines for the official monthly contest? Last day submission etc?
Ps. The themes of SMC so far had been 'one word' themes, I'll check the SMC sticky topic for this but could it be a descriptive sentence as well? |

No limit on the number of words. A more limited challenge with a very specific task could be interesting as well. |
