I've never tried this speed modeling challenge, so what is it? How does it work? Does it mean you have a specified amount of time to model anything, or something in particular, or relating to a specific topic? How much time are you given?
Thanks again!

A subject is decided on before the contest starts, it can be anything at all, person, object, thing. 2 or more artists than have a given amount of time to do their interpretation of whatever was decided on beforehand.
In the context of the forums version you have a given amount of time to do the challenge, but they may allow you 2-4 weeks to do the challenge and post to the forums to be entered in the contest.
For a real treat, go to one of the Thursaday night shared space meetings, they used to have people competing realtime, it's a blast to watch it that way :D

TNL! meetings (like the one this Thursday, August 5th, at 5pm PST) give two artists 15 minutes to make a model, with a subject chosen for them (eg "headphones", "snail", "cell phone", "spaceship", "window", "wheelbarrow" to pick some we've done in the past).
The forum ones do the same thing, they may give you 2 or 3 weeks in which you can submit your model, but the model has to be made in 2 hours (say).

Will some of these meetings ever be held during time that you as an European can attend? For me that means after 18.00 EST to perhaps 24.00 EST on a weekday and perhaps as late as 02.00 on a weekend. 5PM Pacific time is 02.00 (or 2 AM) European standard time (on friday morning) and that makes going to work at 7AM hard... |

Ask on the forums and start up a meeting of your own :) The servers are always open, and its the community who attend that make these meetings, not the Caligari staff members.
So no reason why not to kick off your own meeting in this vein - only the TNL! is Caligari run, and the Animator's Club and the Scripting Club are user started and organized.
For the TNL!, we can't move the time, but you can start your own equivalent. Our UK resident Caligari staff member might even be able to attend too, though I won't be able to as it will be in the middle of my working day.
Like the other user run clubs, if it becomes a regular event, we'll happily add a note about it to our Birds Of A Feather page!
