Thanks Prodigy, I found it hard to get the sense of scale I was hoping for, also it was hard putting the 2 different renders together, as you can see, the bubble dome is not transparent lol whoops |

You know, I was thinking of entering the next speed challenge to get a break from my slogfest Future Fighter project. Till I found out out it involved another flying model. Doh! :D
Still, the images I have seen so far look fun. Might just give it a bash after all. |

Good thing your's isn't eligible for voting this time Prodigy... ;)
But just for you, and because you asked, I took almost a half hour out of my day (between all the work I'm supposed to be doing for my job) to give you another entry. |

Well Prodigy, you will be pleased to know that your stunning space shuttle image inspired me to enter the SMC. I have finished my model and am about halfway through making all the textures.
I will try and finish it off tommorow because if I don't go to bed right now I'm likely to fall asleep at my keyboarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr |

I actually saw the first few entries here and was psyching myself up to enter for once. I've always just played around with 3D, and never had the willpower to sit down and do domething proper. I was just about to start with my brilliant idea when i logged on and prodigy burst my little bubble with a photoreal spaceship made in 2 hours, followed by a stream of speed masterpieces us mortals can only drool over. Then i cried myself to sleep :( . I'll try and muster the courage to give it a bash tommorow, but don't expect a masterpiece now my creative spirit has been squashed. I blame you prodigy, rjeff and Changa :( |

Hi Tiberius..Nice to meet you :) and thanks for reply..
You know?, you are not the first that sais is not fair mix amateur boxing with heavy weight.. and it's true..
I had this idea for a long time and i think it's time to do something to change that..
Why? cos my goal is promote to practice and practice.. that's the best way to learn 3d.. if people think, ho god, my modeling is not good to enter.. better if i go to sleep..
that's the worst thing that can i heard.. :( and i prefere left the smc instead to heard that again..
So this my suggestion..
Create 2 cathegories..
SMC Amateur league and SMC Heavy Weight..
So users can choose and challenge others in a same-skill-level, i think that would be fair and fun for all.. what you think???
:)
sorry for my poor english |

LOL; Nice one James.

Create 2 cathegories...SMC Amateur league and SMC Heavy Weight.
I understand where both Tiberius and Prodigy are coming from but IMO, I think splitting the contest into subcategories would be a big mistake at this stage. Primarily this is because when you think of how many trueSpace users there must be "out there", the amount of entries for the competion is already somewhat slim without dividing them further.
In addition, whilst admittedly this will be my first time entering one of the modelling competitions, I have showed my support (hopefully) by casting my votes over the last couple of months. Further to this, I do not automatically vote for the best looking model, but like to take into account how imaginative the concept was and how much the individual creator pushed their technical ability in order to realise it. And, judging by some of the past winners, other voters take a similar view.
Furthermore, I think that Prodigy deserves great credit for publicising the values of entering this competition and for trying to drum up support for it. And, as a community, we should be rallying round supporting his efforts.
On a personal note, still images have never been of interest to me. Yet I have been really surprised at just how much I have learned working on my competition entry. I'm an animator through and through and as such am used to putting a lot stuff into a scene and getting it all whizzing about to create some dynamism. But having an object just sitting there, not moving, with people having the time to stare at every detail, you have to think about composition, lighting, textures. I have just learned soooo much and wished I'd done this years ago. And (don't worry rant almost over), if you think about it, that's why Prodigy has become so good. Practice, experimentation and learning new tricks. And there is no better, fun way of all achieving all that than entering the SMC and MMC. So come on all, get cracking. |

I agree that splitting more categories would take away from the competition. I just wanted to take out my frustration on you lot :p . Right then, I'll make it my personal target to enter every SMC possible, providing life doesnt get in the way. And all you others who always watch the SMC in awe and never dive in please try to enter to. Everyone happy? Gooood |

Glad to hear it! :D
I was in a similar position for a while and was rather daunted at the idea of taking part - like rjeff and Kena, I wouldn't rank myself up there with Prodigy and several of the others who do enter, but we've all learnt a lot from these challenges and I reckon we've all improved our images significantly since we started taking part. (NB - you guys know I'm not 'picking on you' - I just feel we're in a similar boat in terms of our aspirations etc)
One of the great thing about the forum is the mix of professionals (and professional-level hobbyists), aspiring amateurs, outright noobs (no offence intended to anyone!), beta testers, Caligari staff, educationalists, software developers, etc. There's an enormous wealth of experience available to those of us trying to better ourselves and even the more experienced artists occasionally pick up new tricks! And at least a few of them are prepared to recognise that those of us who may be less technically experienced/proficient can at least offer useful feedback on their works.
The SMC is a great chance to try out new techniques, tackle short modelling challenges that you may not otherwise have considered and stretch your imagination, just for starters... I wouldn't particularly like to see it split up as I think it pushes most of us to aspire to the likes of Prodigy etc, and you also end up with the whole issue of deciding which category is appropriate - e.g. who decides which catgeory I enter? (just picking on myself as an example). Do I decide? I wouldn't consider myself good enough for a top-level category and am an occasional hobbyist at best, but I've had a few decent results. Should someone else decide? That could lead to people being alienated...
Anyway - that's more than enough of that. I totally agree that it would be great to see more entries and have myself missed a few recently due to other committments - but my aim is to enter as frequently as possible as it's been a real benfit to me and it's fun. There's been some great entries this time round too - rjeff I really like your entry, interesting to see someone using Bryce for a change too. Breech - look forward to seeing your entry, likewise Tiberius.
I will be entering too - I've done my model at the weekend, just need to get some time to render... |

This is community run, so of course how it is run is up to the community :)
I would say that splitting it would be hard and take away from the contest, so good to see that it is not being planned. You may find people misjudging themselves as newcomers, making the supposed "easier" section too hard still, and so on.
I also think the aim of this contest is not really about winning. With no prize, really the point is simply to show a wide range of styles and approaches, and while a vote is done for "a winner", everyone who enters wins. Each entry adds something unique, something critical, something done in a way that no other entry did.
This makes it an education for people, to see these different approaches, so your entry to the contest, whether it wins or not, is a contribution to the community and the education and improvement of others. And that's not to mention the education and improvement you undergo by entering and challenging yourself :)
Not only that but I think the main aim of this particular "contest" is not about beating the other people, but simply and purely all joining in together, and then having a lot of fun. This separates it out from other cut-throat contests where its all about "who is best" and "winners and losers"
So I would encourage everyone to enter with whatever they have! Don't pre-judge and think "It's not good enough" just send it in and have fun! Watching this contest run by the community is one of my favorite things to see on the forums, so I hope it doesn't change how it works, that it just keeps growing, and that more folks start entering!
HTH!

JamesMC you are a bit exagerated don't you think?
So I would encourage everyone to enter with whatever they have!
That's the point..
But as a frequently SMC challenger i saw how people left to submit their work cos im sure they think "my entry is not good" or "why spend my time on this" or "my work is not good enough" etc..etc..
You know Tom, there's a lot of people thinking on that. That's why i suggest 2 cathegories with the same subject etc..
But all depends on what people wants, i only suggest..
If everybody likes this way, i accept.. ;) |

Moving away from the great list of categories to the more serious subject of this SMC: I have a problem. Through an hour or so of playing around with my idea, the final picture has veered away slightly from the main title :o . How much leeway is allowed? I'll just say there isn't much flying vehicle at all hehe. Whoops... |

Teach an average man to be great and he will thrive...teach a great man to be average and he will not. The way I see it..I am still learning..but I think that through the SMC and the MMC I have gotten better...so I say leave is like it is...strive to be better than the best..not better than the average. |
