This would be fun.. You can model a plane or a ufo, a giant bird or the kitty hawk!

"Let your imagination run wild" JamesMC Copyright

DEADLINE : 11.13 pm GMT Monday 30 June 2008

The rules:
1. Create the model(s) within the 2 hours time limit.
2. You may enter as many times as you like.
3. Your entry should include a wireframe screen grab before subdivision has been applied, mainly this is so people can get an idea of how things were created and maybe learn something.
4. Include time spent, trueSpace version, render engine.
5. Post only one image per entry which must be no larger than 800x600 pixels. Final composition is up to you.
6. Render time, lighting and texturing are not included as people with slower computers may be at a disadvantage.
7. The winner is encouraged to place a tutorial in the new Tutorium showing how they made their entry (Contact Norm). Sometimes the wireframe isn't enough.

Thought Id give it a go!

This is a deep space city-ship, inside the bubble dome houses a colony of nearly 25,000 citizens travelling deep space, of course they have evolved profoundly smaller than people of earth, thus we appear gigantic in comparison, however they still remain much more intelligent.

SurfCopter

Didn't quite get the concept into image as I ran out of modeling time. :)

Purpose of the SurfCopter is to hover slightly above the water and surf. The rotor blades enable the surfer to effortlessly get to any location, as long as fuel lasts.

Was going to add some outrigger type feet, but ran out of time. Also was going to add an engine cowling behind the seat, but no time.

I eventually got round to running a render on the model I built at the weekend - typical that I struggle to get these things fitted in between commuting, work, meetings etc.

I hadn't seen jamesmc's surfcopter before I went home for the weekend, so any resemblance to that is totally coincidental... or down to the fact that mine is a small 'copter too.

This was inteded to be a (non-existant - i.e. made-up) Gyrocopter,so hopefully that's sort of what it looks like. Would have liked to have gone with wheels but that would have cost me an extra quiarter of an hour I didn't have.

TS5.1, rendered with Lightworks.

Modelling time - 2 hours - mostly poly modelling with SDS added to most parts to smooth things out (mostly allowing me to rough shapes using very crude shapes swept/lathed to simple paths). Accidentally extracted some of the subdivided meshes so I can't show every part before subdiv.

Scene setting - about 10-15mins, using a basic old warehouse type structure I built for some previous project (with and without cladding)

Texturing/lighting and test renders - prob about 1 and half hours.

render took around anhour due to all the subdiv plus 2 IBLs - and the lighting still isn't all that great but didn't feel I could give it any more time. Shiny paint textures use TomG's fresnel shader layered over the freecp reflectance shader that allows reflections to be desaturated - although that's probably not noticeable!

Post-process - about 10-15 mins to run a z-render pass and apply it as a mask to a blurred duplicate of the render to give a faked depth of field effect. First time I've tried this and it worked OK, I think.
