OK here's one for Halloween (or not if it's near the deadline and Halloween was two weeks ago ;) )
Objective:
Model any type of Mask in under 2 hours.
The rules:
1. Create the model in the specified time.
2. You may enter as many times as you like.
3. Your entry should include a wireframe screen grab before subdivision has been applied, mainly this is so people can get an idea of how things were created and maybe learn something.
4. Include time spent, trueSpace version, render engine.
5. Post only one image per entry which must be no larger than 800x600 pixels. Final composition is up to you.
6. Render time, lighting and texturing are not included as people with slower computers may be at a disadvantage.
7. The winner is encouraged to place a tutorial in the new Tutorium showing how they made their entry (Contact Norm). Sometimes the wireframe isn't enough.
Time limit - 120 minutes
Deadline - 11 PM GMT, Monday, November 12th, 2007
Subject - Mask
Post your entries below...

In honor of the Iron Man movie coming out in summer, this is my tribute to the man in the metal mask. For those of you who aren't Iron Man fans, the original armor he built after he escaped was gold. |

HEY EVERYONE . . Long time - no post.
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
Here's what I came up with. Jason Voorhees' Hockey Mask from Friday the 13th.
I ran out of time, and ended up taking about 2 hrs 20 minutes. Mostly due to the shell tool not working right trying to make the mask hollow. Ended up booleaning a modified copy out of the original.
First image is my entry with the wireframe.
I hope no one minds that I also posted my beauty render that I finished. The knife is a freebee I found on the net.
Modeled mostly in 7.5 workspace side, and then finished up in the modeler (where all my problems started ).
Enjoy! |

I'm not much of one for Halloween, but here's a quick Scream mask...
bashed (crudely) together as follows:
TS version: TS 5.1
modelling: approx 45-50 mins (mostly basic - i.e. not very good! - SDS, with a bit of post-extraction boolean subtraction as I forgot that by making the eye-pieces separately I'd still need holes in the main mask...d'oh...)
textures/lighting - 5 mins or less
rendering - approx 2 mins with an IBL
If I spent a bit longer, I might get it looking a bit better, but doubt I'm going to have time before the deadline, so just have to live with it... |

Plain plane modeling. I started with the texture made in PS. A plane was quad divided a few times and textured with the mask as a TGA file. With the soft paint brush the cheeks, nose and brows were then pulled out and some of the sides were pushed back, very fast, very intuitive. Fantastic tools!
Modeling less than 15 min. Vray lighting, 30 min.

This mask is just begging for a Kabuki style paint job. Might post an update if I get the time to UV map and paint it. ;) |
