Hi

I thought a cap would be an easy model to make.

This is what the badge on my entry was supposed to look like!

Why forum police? - just the result of a warped imagination.

All good entries this time - but so few! Shame. The other challenges are good too, but time is currently very precious and this is all I've time for :(

Love the spy-glasses Classic. :)

Yes, only four so far (Georg is hosting so shouldn't be counted in the voting). A poor turnout but I think the problem is because the SMC is losing focus of late, trying to be too 'open' rather than direct. Concepts do not work for an SMC, there's no direct focus. 'Model a trumpet' - interpret it how you like but there's a clear starting point. 'A piece of clothing' is too vague, both in deciding what to do and in potential judging (plus how pedantic you want to be, hats and glasses are technically 'accessories'! :-) ) How is one supposed to choose who merits their vote more, the simple tie or the attempted full Spanish skirt? A sock or a double breasted jacket? The difference is too wide, it's like saying 'model something'.

I love the SMC but don't always have the time to enter, especially when I've got to think up what to model first. With a direct, solid object, that'd remove that obstacle from the equation. I hope the SMC gets 'back to its roots' soon other wise it's going to wither and fade away which will be an extreme shame.

You got a point there, although the SMC with the nicest entries were subjects like musical instruments and garden tools. Quite broad as well. It may have something to do with the interest for the Challenge in general and we may need a change of approach.

Anyway, the entries sofar are great, with Blakeo's shining armor as a stunning ensemble!

Realizing the topic may be a bit too challenging :o I decided to give you all an extra few days (and a weekend) to come up with some more good ideas.

Deadline extension to Monday 22nd!

I am actually impressed. Not too many entries, but what there is shows a great use of imagination and vision....newbie and seasoned artists alike. I agree the topic is a bit too wide open, but still. I've always thought that such a contest was more than just placing a few polys...it's about the creative process. Prop models are just that...Props. But props with character and/or purpose?! awesome!

Since I have not commented on this contest in the past, please do not think that I am dissing earlier contests or contestants...I just didn't feel my comments were needed. Now I realize that if I don't encourage others, I can't complain that they don't live up to 'my' expectations (not that I would complain, or that anyone needs to reach for my idea of how their art should look anyway). Please forgive my arrogance.

more fun! MORE FUN! WOOHOO!

thanks for teaching me things I've long forgotten

Ok, this is a bit embarrassing but is the last image in the armor a render or a picture? I honestly can't tell.

What with my own WIP and doing extensive Beta testing on a different program, I just have not had time to do the speed model challenges. But I will defiantly like to take the time to vote on this one... the hat - tie and armor are my favorites so far... And that armor really isn't bad at all. For only two hours, I would say it is much more than I could expect to do :D

Georg - can you clarify - when on Monday? (and what timezone?!)

and note you should edit the first post of the challenge thread accordingly.

Have I still got time to post an entry this morning? Not that it's very good mind...

Hi Nez, I am flexible :D, let's say the latest time zone when it is still Monday and not yet Tuesday everywhere. So in Europe you still have several 2hour periods, I am counting on you!

Forgot all about the first thread, changed it, but may be too late.

Cheers

Ha! That's cool - I modelled one at the weekend but didn't get to render it - it's just 'cooking' now and should be done by the time I take my lunchbreak. If I'm lucky, I might try to knock something up during lunch too, though that will have to be a rush job... (sub 1-hour).

Thanks Georg.

Georg / Prodigy / Jack / Kena : Thanks for the kind words guys! :o My modelling has improved greatly since taking part here in this community. A  for the community :) There are plenty of great modellers here for inspiration.

But I don't think I've been a 'kid' for about 20 years or so - well, maybe not physically :)

Prodigy: Do you mean project catwalk? If we had all our entries that would be one strange fashion show... :D ... actually Project Runway sounds more fun. Hmmm, Rocket Powered Armour, Flying Saucer Hats, Satellite Spy Glasses...

<cough> Moving on. That's one nice shirt and tie combo - two great modelling examples there. I really like how you can see the effect of SDS on the tie control mesh - very instructive example!

Hi Nez, very nice work. I had something like that in mind but it led to nothing. You say it is all done in Nurbs? Does this mean you actually modeled curved planes and stitched them together, like a real tailor? I wonder how you did that. Can you explain it a bit?

thanks Georg - I too hoped to try something a little more ambitious than this but go so fed up with the NURBs that I gave up at this point! Was going to be a long sleeved shirt, but the folds in the sleeve are really difficult to do, so it ended up as short sleeved.

In answer your question, I drew a closed curve and copied it a number of times, and positioned them around my mannequin torso, scaling and positioning them to suit. I then did a 'skin' command to form a continuous surface between the curves. By using copies of the same curve, each has the same number of control points and providing they stay reasonably aligned, the skinning is fairly straightforward.

I then cut trimming holes in the shoulders and formed sleeves using a similar technique to the body section, and attached them with the blend or stitch tool (can't remember which!). The collar was basically formed by 'point editing' the control points of the top few curves but was rather problematic, which is why it looks a little tatty.

I used the 'refine patch' tool (I think that's what it was called) to add a few extra curves into the shirt so I could pull/push a few creases and seems, although not really enough to look convincing. Buttons were just done with poly modelling.

See attached for a simple skirt-type object done in a similar manner - just moving a few control points in the some of the curves give some nice undulations - I used a similar method on some open curves for modelling curtains recently...

Thanks for sharing your technique Nez, it is really like being a tailor with stitching and all! Very instructive to see such a different approach.

Georg - make sure you add a closing date to the poll thread so people know wehn voting will close ;)

Georg/Dragneye - cheers for the feedback. I've very little experience with this sort of technique myself, so would recommend you take it with a degree of caution, as I'm most likely not doing things quite right! I managed to sort of get away with it this time, but it was a bit painful... I prefer solid modelling by a long shot...!
