I keep crashing with tS7.5 as it would open the scene then give me a crash report and then kept crashing each time I opened it up.
I reinstalled tS7.5 and was able to re-open the "garden" scene. Not sure what happened, but it crashed hard.
Too late to do any mods as I've already spent my nickel on this project. :) |

Very nice subject. I have an idea and hope I can find some time in the weekend. Good entries already, lots of gardeners on this forum. Steinie should throw in a few snails to go with the goats...:D

Well, this is an established rolling process - the winner of the challenge sets the next topic, we all vote and a new winner is selected, etc. So etiquette-wise, no you can't suggest a new SMC challenge, although you could start something completely different. But as we already have the SMCs, Monthly modelling challenges, immersive environment competitions, etc it would be best not to for the moment! |

Nice entry, Blakeo. I was considering an electric mower, but went for the old fashioned hand tool myself.

George, can you explain more about how you made the knives?
You write :"They follow the perimeter of a cylinder and curve one fifth of 360 degrees" - how do you accomplish this? |

:"They follow the perimeter of a cylinder and curve one fifth of 360 degrees"
Hi Spyfrog, I will try to explain what I meant, Upon rereading it does sound quite cryptic :D
When you pull the mower from the shed you don’t realize what a nice construction it is. From the net I learned that they can be found with 4,5, or 6 knives. When looking at it, it was clear that the knives curve under a certain degree depending on their number per 360 degrees. With four knives it was 90 degree, 72 for 5 knives etc. This way the knives cut a bit sideways and only a small portion of the knife touches the floor/grass at a given time when the reel with the knives is rolling.
To make a knife for a 5-knife reel I used the sweeptool to sweep a rectangular cube 12 times with a rotation of 6 degrees (makes 72 degrees, 5 x 72 is a full 360). (The sweeptool remembers the rotation, so you only have to adjust that once in the Object Info box). I used a cylinder with an appropriate size as a scaffold. By putting the axis of the cube outside the cube in the center of the cylinder the sweeped cubes will now follow the perimeter of the cylinder. That is how the knife was made.
I enclose a small illustration to show you how I used a cylinder as scaffold. You can see how the cubes remain perpendicular to the tangent at each point (in the drawing only seven sweeps were made for clarity). From above it looks like not much, but from aside it makes a nicely curved knife. Copying the knife 5 times with rotations in units of 72 degrees around the central axis of the cylinder and the basis of the reel was ready. I hope this makes it clear.
This is the nice thing with the SMC, you are forced to look at things and understand their construction and then try to make it in 3D, a real challenge!.

Very nice Georg. I like the traditional mower - reminds me of being a kid!
Nice method for making the blades too. I would have stuggled with the lathe tool if it was me (and probably got nowhere!) so thanks for sharing.
I went for the High Octane version :p as I knew I'd be challenging myself to even get close to finishing it in 2 hours...

Thank you so much for your explanation Georg.
I would never have figured out that you could do the knive blades like that. |
