I would have voted Jack, but he seems to have gone slightly over time and did not have that final render. Prodigy, you would have been it if the SDS had not messed up the plug at the bottom, so it just had to be Changa this time around for me :D
But Blakeo needs to tell me how he got the ribbing on his cans!

But Blakeo needs to tell me how he got the ribbing on his cans!

Sorry kena - I was on holiday when you posted this - only just getting round to replying...

The ribbing was done by using the add edge loop tool and then resizing the loops. See the attached mini-tutorial images and... follow me.... :)

I'll keep it simple so that any beginners out there might benefit too ;)

The following applies to v7.5 Workspace and assumes the default icon layouts

1. Create a cylinder and right click to enter point edit mode - Click yes to convert to editable mesh (if you get the option to).

It will be easier to work from a front view rather than perspective from here on so press CTRL-5 to switch to front view. (CTRL-1 will take you to perspective view)

2. Turn on 'Open point edit snapping' (bottom right in image 2). Select the 'Add loop' Tool (bottom left in image 2). Move the mouse along a vertical edge of the cylinder towards the middle of the object. When you're near the centre the yellow point will appear to indcate the mid point of the cylinder's edge. Left click to place an edge loop at this point.

3. Moving up the same edge of the cylinder will now snap half way between the centre and the top of the cylinder. Place an edge loop here. Do the same in the lower half of the cylinder. These new upper and lower edge loops will be the upper and lower limits of the ribbing.

4 + 5. Continue in the same way adding edge loops at the mid way points until you get something like image 5. You may need to zoom in a bit to accurately place the edges.

6. Still in point edit mode, select the 'Pick and Paint selected' icon (first red circle in image 6) and select the 'Select Edge Loops' tool (second red circle in image 6). Now move the mouse up the cylinder and, holding down the CTRL key, select every other edge loop between the upper and lower loops (you need to hold CTRL down to select muliple edges)

7. OK lets make them ribs! Using the widget (which is soooo tiny in image 7!) resize the selected loops in all axes, i.e. hold both mouse buttons, so that they are slightly smaller. You may find that the can looks a bit weird (as I did - notice the zig-zaggy shading).

8. If your cylinder looks anything like this use the 'Auto Facet Normals' tool to get it looking a bit more like expected. Doing this at this point will not lose your selection of the alternate edge loops.

9. Notice that resizing in all 3 axes has left us with a greater relative movement in the upper and lower loops - becoming less obvisous towards the middle of the cylinder - this is because tS is resizing the loops as a single object, not as individual loops.

10. To correct this simply use the widget to resize the loops larger in the Y axis until they look about even. And we're done. I added one level of SDS to my edge loops in the challenge to smooth them a bit, but you can play around with that ...

OK, you can now go forth and Rib everything - but no 'black knobblers' please ;) :D

Blakeo.
