tS Speed model challenge #17 "Musical Instrument"

_________________________________________

It's difficult to come up with these isn't it? I picked this topic because the range of possibilities is wide enough to have something really simple for newcomers or totally complex for the more seasoned modellers :)

There's plenty of scope for creativity too. Doesn't matter if you've never entered before - just give it a go!

Objective:

Model any type of Musical Instrument in under 2 hours.

The rules:

1. Create the model in the specified time.

2. You may enter as many times as you like.

3. Your entry should include a wireframe screen grab before subdivision has been applied, mainly this is so people can get an idea of how things were created and maybe learn something.

4. Include time spent, trueSpace version, render engine.

5. Post only one image per entry which must be no larger than 800x600 pixels. Final composition is up to you.

6. Render time, lighting and texturing are not included as people with slower computers may be at a disadvantage.

7. The winner is encouraged to place a tutorial in the new Tutorium showing how they made their entry (Contact Norm). Sometimes the wireframe isn't enough.

Time limit - 120 minutes

Original Deadline - 11 PM BST (10 PM GMT), Monday, July 30th, 2007 (5 PM EST - I think)

(EDIT : Revised Deadline : Tuesday 31st at 10am BST - 9 am GMT - 4 am EST - to give that last minute Monday evening to everyone!)

Subject - Muscial Instrument

Well it took me long enough, but I wanted to get some video's up on the site....anyway here is mine.

Model: Dunno really, but < 2 hours.

render/texture: @ 20 total(accidentally set too many photons for caustics 20,000 instead of 2000).

Well I bit off more than I could chew! I'm not a speed modeler and I need a first aid kit close by just in case I cut off a foot. Although this piece is disqualified I still wanted to post what I did get done since this is a cool topic. I actually do play the thing and funny as it sounds the German Craftsman who made the violin was named "Jacob Stainer":)
Where are all the other entries for this very cool SMC? If I have time I may attempt another instrument...that blade of grass sounds possible...:D
I still plan on finishing "Stainer" for future needs. To me this is one of three man made objects I find beautiful. Your going to find this strange but here goes...
1) Violin
2) 10 Speed Bicycle
3) Number 2 Pencil (after countless sharpenings)

Got one done, and even with a rudimentary scene to display it in. I chose to do a wireless microphone, with a stand.

Microphone took about 30 minutes, and the stand took another 30 (had trouble positioning a gouge to remove the top of the holder.)

Texturing took about 30 minutes more. Lighting around an hour. (Thought about doing volumetrics, and then decided against it, and not just because I was having trouble getting it to work...)

Rendered modelside in Lightworks. About a minute.

This is my 'non-serious' entry, my custom 'Supa-Tuba'... unlike ordinary tubas, it has valve sets for both hands (and some rather silly looking pipework - was going to stick a helix in for good measure but decided that was a bit too silly!)

I'm intending to do an electric guitar for my 'proper' entry but got this idea in my head and had to have a go... ;)

SupaTuba, modelled in TS5 in approx 1hr

lighting/textures/rendering - approx 15mins

Mostly swept polys with a bit of SDS applied to smooth it out... Hope I still have time to get me guitar done!

I have never been very active on this forum myself but have been following it as a great source of info on Ts and what not..

As a music lover and long time drummer I could not resist to enter the speed challenge with a snare drum. Alas, my modeling took me -a little- over the 2h limit, but I decided to go ahead anyway, an orchestra needs rhythm. Modeling was simple but the hoops took me longer than anticipated. I made them from lathing a curve from the drawpad. I really like that tool, but had trouble finding the right diameter with regards to the hoop profile.

Bolt holders are also made from a –sweeped- path and the rest is just cylinders, with some Booleans.

Texturing about an hour, including pulling the logo from the net and making a texture in PS.

Rendering in Vray, took quite a while but had dinner in the meantime.

Hope you like it. Had no time for snare holders and such but maybe later.

OK, here's my 'serious' entry....

Electric guitar - modelled in TS5

Modelling time - approx 1hr45mins

texturing/lighting/rendering - approx 45mins

post-process (a bit of 2d correction of rendering artefacts) - approx 5 mins

Mostly polys, but I tried SDS for the main guitar body, which seemed to work OK (until I tried to boolean the extracted mesh - hence odd looking wireframe). Intended to add fret markers and could have done with sorting out the string spacing slightly... and the 'through-body stringing' didn't work quite, but it's almost ok... ;)
